E.T. fans, he’s back! We just watched the new Xfinity Christmas ad for 2019 and it’s a really touching one. Even though it’s a Christmas ad that has brought our favourite extra-terrestrial E.T. back onto our screens, we’re still loving it!

The Steven Spielberg movie E.T. was one of my favourite films as a child. I just loved E.T. and his relationship with Elliot. And there was a bit of excitement as he had to escape the federal agents who were trying to analyse this extra-terrestrial being.

The 1982 movie ended up being one of the highest-grossing films ever made, but Spielberg always resisted making a follow up to the film about an alien left behind on earth who befriends a young boy and attempts to “phone home”.

It was also an honest movie showing how divorced families and single moms have to deal with life – for example, the scene when Elliot pretends to be ill to stay off school and his mom has no choice but to leave him home (supposedly) alone while she goes to work.

Plus, it launched Drew Barrymore’s acting career, so no wonder it became an all around classic movie.

If E.T. was a favourite of yours too, then you’ll enjoy watching his reprise on screens. See how many of the original movie moments they have recreated in the new Xfinity ad – it might be a Christmas ad but we’re still loving it!

E.T. in the Xfinity Christmas Ad

The new two minute version of the ad shows Elliott (the same actor from the original movie), who is now a father to two kids. The children are playing outside when they hear a noise and follow tracks in the snow to eventually spot E.T. hiding behind a snowman.

Just like their father once did upon first meeting the alien, the kids scream out loud. E.T. then asks if the boy is Elliott as he obviously looks like his dad, when grown up Elliott comes outside and realises who he sees before him.

As he comes indoors, the flowers in the vase grow again (remember that in the original movie?) but some things have definitely changed – the son shows E.T. the “internet” on an tablet and also gets him to try a V.R. helmet. Seeing a dinosaur causes our favourite alien to fall over in surprise!

Finally, it’s time to snuggle up on the sofa time to watch the classic Christmas movie White Christmas on TV.

e.t. holiday adAt the end of the ad E.T. wants to go home to see his own family, so just like in the original movie, the kids end up flying on bikes flying to meet the spacecraft before everyone says goodbye.

You can find E.T. reunion special bonuses available online, watch the full four-minute version of the reunion story, as well as see an interview with actor Henry Thomas (Elliott).

And if you are an Xfinity TV customer with X1 you can say “E.T. Phone Home” into your voice remote and connect to an E.T.-themed destination!

All very soppy I know, but the new Christmas ad did leave me with a smile on my face and lots of memories of the original movie. In fact, now I’m planning to watch it with my two kids this Christmas!
