Going a completely different direction from last year’s ad The Boy and the Piano, this year, John Lewis have teamed up with their partner business Waitrose for a combined Christmas ad.
The ad tells the story of a little girl, Ava, and her excitable friend, Edgar. The little dragon’s excitement about Christmas is a bit too much sometimes threatening to spoil things in a humorous way, but it’s also about how someone goes the extra mile for their best friend.
John Lewis released a teaser video on social media the day before the main video release to whet people’s appetites.

The story this year is all about the magic of friendship and how one thoughtful gesture can make all the difference.
Edgar’s excitement around the festive season can often lead to fiery consequences, and he keeps getting into trouble because he can’t control his fiery breath. He accidentally melts a snowman. He destroys an ice rink. He ends up setting the village Christmas tree on fire.
He realises he’s spoiling things so he shuts himself away until his friend Ava comes up with an idea for the perfect present to help him light up Christmas in his own special way.
The song may be familiar, it’s Can’t Fight This Feeling Anymore by REO Speedwagon, re-recorded by Bastille.
I think Edgar is adorable and any story of friendship is sweet. After all, how we can make loved ones feel special is part of Christmas.
