Peter Rabbit, one of Beatrix Potter’s classic characters, is a classic childhood favourite so there was great excitement when it was announced that it would soon be a star-studded movie. Unfortunately, it didn’t turn out that way and now the Peter Rabbit Movie trailer is out – and fans aren’t happy.

Peter Rabbit first appeared in Beatrix Potter’s The Tale of Peter Rabbit in 1902, followed by several more of Potter’s stories. Peter was portrayed as a naughty, greedy little bunny who disobeyed his mother, stole vegetables from farmer Mr McGregor’s garden, and barely managed to escape from being put into a pie.

With more than 150 million copies of the Peter Rabbit series sold worldwide, there are generations of fans who would flock to see a movie about this loveable rogue. Unfortunately, this may not the case with the upcoming Peter Rabbit movie, if early reactions are anything to go by.

Voiced by James Cordon, Peter Rabbit is shown as a partying, twerking, swaggering bunny. In the trailer, Peter throws a roaring house party for his woodland friends (including, inexplicably, the fox who tried to eat him). But, of course, nothing is that simple – the house is, in fact, that of Mr McGregor who returns home mid-party.

Played by Domhnall Gleeson, Mr McGregor is certainly not the cantankerous and formidable farmer I remember from my childhood – in fact, his character is almost overwhelmed by Peter’s behaviour.

Even in the short trailer, the attempts at humour are weak. A badger playing darts with a hedgehog – and I mean literally throwing the hedgehog as the dart – sets the tone.

Beatrix Potter fans are not happy, so it will be interesting to see how the full Peter Rabbit movie is received when it is released in Spring 2018.

The CGI/live action movie also stars Sam McNeill, Rose Byrne, Margot Robbie and Daisy Ridley.
