Bike Week is a celebration and promotion of all that’s great about bikes and cycling. During the third week of June from (10th to the 17th) every year since 2009 bike and cycling events are organised by local authorities, community and cycling groups all over Ireland.
An Mheitheal Rothar (Galway’s Community Bike Workshop) is a non-profit community bicycle workshop based on Earl’s Island across from Galway cathedral on NUIG campus where they teach and help people to repair their own bicycles.
In concurrence with it’s 4th anniversary An Mheitheal Rothar is organising the bike week launch event for Galway to be held at Spanish Arch on the 10th of June starting at 1:00pm and finishing at 5:00 pm.
This is a community-run event that aims to promote of all that’s great about bikes and cycling and provide free mechanical service instruction with the people of Galway while raising awareness of the issue of a need for ecological and sustainable transport in galway and the positive health effects associated with cycling in our society.
Cycling is a great way to get around, and with National Bike Week promoting cycling this June, we hope to see more and more people enjoying the benefits of choosing a bike as their mode of transport. Bike Week not only promotes the leisure and fun aspects of cycling as a family, with friends, to sightsee; it also highlights the other great benefits, health, saving money and efficiency. It is also a great solution to beating traffic congestion in our towns and cities.
Volunteers and visitors alike will be invited to take part in the repair of their own bicycles with guidance from An Mheitheal Rothar Mechanics.
Members of the community attending the event will be entertained by a DJ and music and there will be many more events run throughout the day.
