The Old Fort Quarter Festival in Portlaoise is now in its 4th year. The Old Fort Quarter Festival combines the history and heritage of Portlaoise with music, food and family entertainment in one unforgettable weekend. 2018 saw 22,000 people on the streets of Portlaoise over the 3 days of the festival and this year’s festival will be the biggest and best yet.
A Festival Based In Local Heritage
The 3 day heritage festival is based in and around the walls of the Old Fort Protector, the first of its kind built in Ireland between 1547 and 1548 during the tenure of Bellingham, Lord Justice of Ireland, in the reign of “the boy King” Edward VI. The Fort played a major part in how the town developed and its heritage is celebrated throughout the weekend with re- enactments, heritage talks, sword making, medieval hairstyles, and medieval cooking displays. There will be a fun Old Fort treasure trail for kids and a historic walking tour for adults. For those that want to find out more on the history of the fort and other historic events in the town there will be a series of heritage talks. Life in the 1500s is bought to life in an entertaining way to capture the imaginations of both adults and children.
Free Daytime Entertainment For All The Family
Of course there’s lots of other family fun over the weekend along the main street with comedy and family friendly shows, giant games, face painting and lots more to keep everyone entertained. This year sees some new acts like Ballet Poulet and Ronaldo Fanzini bringing their madcap shows to the festival. The main street is pedestrianised for the full weekend making it the perfect spot to spend the day enjoying music, heritage, food and entertainment. 2 stages will provide daytime family entertainment, an artisan market with food stalls and food demonstrations will make sure everyone is well fed. The whole street event is wrapped up in the local heritage stories, characters and re-enactments and overall good fun.
Night Time Gets A Brand New Events Venue
The new Old Fort stage, set within the walls of Laois Music Centre at the heart of the original Old Fort, will bring us some amazing acts over the 3 nights. This is a ticketed event and will offer superb value to see multiple acts each night. Headliner acts over the weekend include ABBAesqe, Qween, King Kong Company, Pogueology, Transmitter, Smash Hits and many more. Tickets are €15 per night or €40 for the weekend and will give you up to 4 acts per night.
New Heritage Pub Trail
This year also sees the introduction of a Laois Heritage Pub trail with all participating pubs having live music and entertainment each night of the festival. This gives people the choice of multiple venues and the ability to see a wide variety of acts in different settings. There are 12 pubs on the trail and some of the acts conformed are Paddy Casey, Mark McCabe, Daft Punk Tribute band, Red Hot Chillis tribute band and Riff Shop. Laois Comhaltas are also on board and have added a great Seisiúin trail offering the best in traditional music, Ol agus Craic. More updates to follow.
