April is a strange month for growers as it is the time of limited supply of last season crops and the planting of the new season crops has just begun. It is only with the use of polytunnels and fleeces that the organic grower can ensure early production of the best produce.
This month we have been harvesting salad leaves fresh every day for the boxes and the market. We use a winter hardy mix, and these plants were planted in the tunnels back in last November after the final tomatoes were taken out. Growth is slow during the winter but once the days start getting that bit longer and the first touch of heat is felt they spring into growth.
Generally we use a mixture of mizuna, Osaka purple, red mustard, lambs lettuce and winter purslane. These are all hardy salad greens and give you the first lovely greens in spring.
So April is a time of plenty (plenty of work to do!) and a time of scarcity.
Other plants that are ready in this time are spinach and kale, chard and swede, leeks are still in season although they are finishing up now.
Green Earth Organics is based on a family run farm in Corrandulla. We run a box scheme that delivers fresh organic produce all over the Galway area and we also have a stall at the Oranmore and Moycullen market.
