Aldi, Lidl, Iceland, Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose have removed some of their frozen vegetable products due to fears over a listeria outbreak and contamination following 9 deaths in Europe.

Listeriosis is a disease that primarily affects elderly people, persons with weakened immune systems, pregnant women, and newborns. Symptoms include fever and muscle aches, often preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms.

It usually happens from eating contaminated food. Now tests done on a food factory in Hungary have identified frozen sweetcorn as the source of the most recent outbreak of listeriosis.

Dr Kathie Grant from Public Health England said: “Most people won’t have any symptoms of the infection or will only experience mild symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhoea, which usually pass within a few days without the need for treatment.”

The best way to prevent listeriosis is to practise good food hygiene. Frozen vegetables, including sweetcorn, need to be cooked before eating. This is especially true if planning to add them to salads, smoothies or dips.

Food experts are advising all frozen vegetables to be cooked before being eaten.
