Burren Smokehouse

Burren Smokehouse

The Burren Smokehouse is a family-run business that was set up 20 years ago, in 1989, by Birgitta & Peter Curtin in Lisdoonvarna, Co. Clare. We believe in finest quality food products, good customer care and a good group of team workers to ensure that we keep up our high standards. Birgitta and husband Master Smoker Peter carefully source Irish quality raw materials to produce their superb smoked salmon, mackerel, trout and eel in their highly acclaimed, award winning traditional smokehouse. We also smoke cheese from one of Clare’s renowned cheese makers. The Smokehouse currently employs a staff of twelve.

Apart from the Smoked Fish Products, we also provide the top-end gift market with ideas: we offer a wide range of food hampers. All products can be ordered over the Burren Smokehouse website, or bought directly in our visitor centre in Lisdoonvarna where you can also watch a short video about the smoking process, experience our first kiln that is displayed there and taste our smoked salmon.

Our philosophy

– Artisan smokehouse = small, handcrafted production.
– Our products are sourced as locally as possible. All our fish and cheese products are of Irish origin.
– Our focus is on organic salmon and sustainable fishing of mackerel as well as the well-being of the farmed salmon.
– First priority: highest achievable quality standards.

Burren Smokehouse is a member of Slow Food Ireland and Good Food Ireland, two prestigious organisations concerned with the promotion and marketing of handcrafted artisan food made in Ireland.

Health benefits
About 360 million years ago, when marine life started to crawl out of the oceans and into the extensive swamps, our early ancestors would have eaten a diet based substantially on seafood on the edges of the waters. Unfortunately, since then, the diet of most people has radically changed – a large drop of intake of omega-3 fatty acids can be observed. The fall in fish consumption over the past decades and the imbalance between omega-6 and omega-3 acids may account for the apparent rise in occurrence of many diseases where omega-3 consumption has been demonstrated to bring benefits. Meaning in plain English: Eat more fish and stay healthy!
