September is the month of the great harvest. Potatoes, carrots, onions, lettuce the list goes on and on! But to try and pick a particular vegetable that comes into its own in September it would probably have to be the pepper. We can use the colour of the peppers at the end of the season as a barometer of how good or bad the summer has been. Green, summer has been ok to bad, red the summer has been great. The last two years we harvested mainly green peppers, this year we are seeing the first peppers turning yellow! You can harvest peppers right through September and even into mid October.
Again, fresh peppers are so juicy and sweet you just want to eat them raw straight from the plant. We have noted through the years that even if the peppers stay green they tend to be just as sweet as the red ones.
|September is also really the month of the potato, it is now that the big potato harvests happen to fill the store rooms for the winter. So in the boxes leaving the farm in this month you will generally find scallions, lettuce, salads, peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers and courgettes, potatoes, carrots and onions, It really is the best month for home grown produce!! Happy harvesting!|
Green Earth Organics is based on a family run farm in Corrandulla. We run a box scheme that delivers fresh organic produce all over the Galway area and we also have a stall at the Oranmore and Moycullen market.
