Continuing our series “Mykidstime Loves” where we highlight things that we think are great for parents, kids & families! We heard about the campaign When Nurture Calls and we think it is brilliant:
When Nurture Calls Campaign
Have you heard about the When Nurture Calls campaign? It aims to protect a mother’s right to breastfeed her baby in public by striving to pass bill HB1706, which will protect breastfeeding mothers from harassment and discrimination when they choose to nurture their child in public.
The bill originally introduced in 2013 by Texas House Representative, Jessica Farrar, expanded on current state provisions by ensuring women are legally protected from harassment when they breastfeed in public places. Unfortunately this bill was dismissed by the Texas State Legislature.
However, in January of 2015, Farrar is expected to reintroduce The Bill for approval. The purpose of this site is to keep support and momentum for this upcoming year. If this bill is passed, when mothers are harassed for breastfeeding, they are protected by law and have the right to call for legal action against any persons or facility.
We want to give a big round of applause to this campaign for mothers who struggle everyday to nurture their babies, but are forced to retreat to secluded areas because of discrimination and harassment from the public.
Print Ads in Bathrooms
The first part of the campaign has been print ads placed on the back of bathroom stalls. These ads create a “reflection” of the stall facing it, and show mothers who have been harassed to the point where they feel they have no other option but to nurture their baby in the restroom as to not offend anyone.
The body copy on the ad reads:
“Would you eat here? By law, breastfeeding mothers are not protected from harassment and refusal of service in public, often forcing them to feed in secluded spaces such as public bathrooms. Contact your state and/or local representative to voice your support for breastfeeding mothers, because a baby should never be nurtured where nature calls.”
Website and App
There is now a When Nurture Calls website which gives you information on what the campaign is and how you can help.
There are also plans for a Breast Friends app specifically for breastfeeding mothers which will show locations for nearby places and restaurants that support HB1706 and a mother’s right to nurture her child when she needs to.
Here, customers can purchase specialised milk cartons, provided by Borden, that represent 1/4 of a baby’s daily milk intake. The money from these cartons goes to support the campaign and its efforts to pass HB1706. The more sales of cartons, the more support the restaurant has and is more welcoming for mothers.
Other features of the app will include tips for breastfeeding in public, and reviews from other mothers on places they have visited. Breast Friends will also allow mothers to sign the petition for HB1706 when they can’t find any support near them.
