She believed she could…so she did
When 13-year old Azmera is told she must get married, she does something unheard of; she says no. This beautiful, shy and timid girl is the first of generations of women in her family brave enough to stand up and say no, I want more. I want to learn, I want to be free.
Azmera lives in Ethiopia, one of the most difficult places on earth to be a girl. For many girls here, even the most basic education is a dream. But Azmera dreams of going to University and someday becoming a teacher.
Can Azmera change what has been the fate for women in her family for generations and break free? Find out what happened to her in the critically acclaimed film Girl Rising.
Girl Rising is a must see film for women and girls who believe that all women should have the chance to chase their dreams. It tells the story of nine girls around the world, who bravely stood up to be counted and refused to accept the fate others chose for them. Azmera’s story is narrated by multiple Academy Award-winner Meryl Streep, who says, “This film delivers hope: reasonable, measurable, tangible hope that the world can be healed and helped to a better future.”
NGO World Vision supported Azmera in taking a stand and saying no to early marriage. The overseas aid organisation strives to stop the tradition of early marriage and help girls like Azmera pursue their education and decide their own futures.
