6 Fun Family Day Trips Near County Cavan

When you are looking to head out for the day and you have exhausted all Cavan’s attractions, how about venturing slightly further afield? Here are 6 fun family trips near Cavan and all these spots are within an hour & half from Cavan Town.

#1. Monaghan County Museum, Monaghan, Co. Monaghan

Immerse yourself in the history of County Monaghan with over 70,000 artifacts in the collection which spans over 9,000 years it gives a comprehensive idea of what life was like through the ages in Monaghan!  Admission is free.

#2. The Marble Arch Caves, Co. Fermanagh

The Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark is host to one of Europe's finest showcaves allowing visitors to explore a fascinating, natural underworld of rivers, waterfalls, winding passages and lofty chambers. 

Spectacular walkways allow easy access while powerful lighting reveals the stunning beauty and grandeur of the caves. Electrically powered boats glide through huge caverns carrying visitors along a subterranean river. 

Tours last for 75 minutes and are suitable for people of average fitness. Comfortable walking shoes and a warm sweater are recommended!

#3. Hill of Tara, Co Meath

Royal Tara was the ancient spiritual and political capital of Ireland and plays an integral part in Irish History.  For well over two thousand years, royalty occupied Tara.  The view from the hill is fantastic, and the surrounding countryside is considered to be one of the richest pastureland in the whole of Ireland.

#4. Arigna Mining Experience, Arigna, Co Roscommon.

Come and take this unique underground tour in what was Irelands last working coal mine which closed in 1990… and see how the coal was mined. A truly unforgettable experience. Stroll through the exhibition area which traces 400 years of mining history and working way of life of the area.

With an ex-miner as your tour guide, you will have the opportunity to walk through an underground coal mine and learn about the incredible life of the miners. Situated in an area of breathtaking scenery, the centre is just 11 miles from Carrick-on-Shannon.

Full coffee shop and picnic area, the centre is open all year. Fully accessible and suitable for all ages. A truly unforgettable experience

#5. Belvedere House & Gardens, Mullingar, Co Westmeath

Set in 160 Acres of Parkland, Belvedere House & Gardens is great for exploring!

#6. Midland Karting, Edgeworthstown, Co Longford

Good Quality 1100 metre asphalt racing track giving a smooth racing ride!  Paintballing also available…a great day out for everyone!
