Halloween is not only coming up soon, but is also definitely a favourite holiday time for most kids (nothing to do with all that candy…).

Decorating the house is always a fun tradition. We dig out the Halloween decorations box and enjoy putting up our usual Halloween decorations, from our wonky Halloween bunting to our favourite skeleton on the door. This year though I wanted some new ideas, so I’ve rounded up some of our new favourites.

Wicked Witch Doormat

I love this idea from Parents.com to make a Wicked Witch doormat feature. They have used some striped stockings and stuffed them, then added some black witchy shoes. All tucked under the doormat for a fun decoration.

You could also stick your witchy legs into a flower or plant pot (upside down of course).

Paper Roll Spooky Eyes

Make spooky eyes out of toilet or kitchen roll holders, just cut out different pairs of eyes then place glow sticks inside. You can put them into bushes and trees to spook out passers-by.

This is a fun halloween decoration idea from BHG.com to make various tombstones for the garden. They painted foam board black and then added funny inscriptions in white paint pen.

Glowing Face Masks

This is such a spookily effective Halloween decoration idea. Pick up some craft masks and then hang them outside on a wall with glow sticks or battery-operated tea lights inside to make glowing spooky faces when it gets dark.

Broom Parking Station

Love this idea from Hubpages to make a Broom Parking station! They have picked up a few cheap brooms from the discount store, then created a Broom Parking sign with a Halloween pun, of course, “all others will be toad”.

Halloween Light Tree

This is a brilliant idea from Homemidi to double up your outdoor lighting for both Halloween to Christmas. Wrap your tree in lights, add some Halloween decorations like a spooky web. Once Halloween is over, you can take down the Halloween bits, turn the lights off for a few weeks until you are ready to turn on your Christmas lights.

Halloween Door Silhouettes

These Halloween Door Silhouettes are so cool and would definitely turn heads driving by. You’ll find all the instructions on Instructables for this project. They have used thin plywood to cut out their shapes but I’m sure if you had cardboard box panels these could be used as well.

Halloween Bat Staircase Decoration

This is such a simple but effective halloween decoration idea – wrap orange halloween lights around your banister and then stick bat shapes to the wall.

This could be a fun afternoon craft project to get your kids to cut out lots of bats, or you can order bat sticker sets on Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com. (NB if you buy through our Amazon links, we get a small commission.)

Halloween Spiderweb Doorway

Make this cool spider web door decoration by constructing the web with white string. Then make it super-spidery with lots of different sized toy spiders. (That big spider is really creepy!)

Day of the Dead Pumpkins

To celebrate the Mexican holiday, Dia de los Muertos, which falls close to Halloween, you could make Day of the Dead decorations for your pumpkins. You’ll need white and other coloured paints to make the sugar skull motifs on the pumpkins.

The Abbey Co Seattle has a step-by-step for how they did theirs.

You can also find a full tutorial for a carved and painted version with “how to” instructions on BHG on how to decorate a sugar skull pumpkin, along with a free stencil that you can print and use.
