Great Present Books for Kids

One of the best presents you can give a child is a book. Sometimes with the array of books available, it can be hard to choose the best kids books. Whether buying for your own child or looking for presents, here are some classic present books for kids, including Christmas titles that we can assure you will go down a treat! 

Picture Books for Children

Martin Waddell’s classic Owl Babies, Farmer Duck and Can’t You Sleep Little Bear are popular and lasting picture books for kids that are also all now available on DVD, so you can enjoy both the reading experience and then watch the story.

Have great fun with the whole family over the holiday season with We’re Going on a Bear HuntHanda’s Surprise and Hooray for Fish.

Or what about Irish author, Mary Murphy who has written a number of picture books including Little Owl and the Star, Comet The Fairy Dog, Kaola and the Flower.

Books for 6 year olds

Mary Murphy’s series are all fabulous: Parrot Park, Comings and Goings at Parrot Park, Moonchap, All the Little Ones and a Half.

Don Conroy has also written a great series suitable for age 6 up, all about witches: Witches on Vacation, The W Files and Witches Birthday Party.

Little Mouse and the Big Red Apple – A.H. Benjamin

When Little Mouse finds a big red juicy apple, he doesn’t want to share it with his friends, eventhough they would all like a bite.

But will he manage to get the apple home without their help?


Books for 7 year olds

Hardback books at paperback prices, Mercy Watson to the Rescue and Mercy Watson Goes for a Ride are perfect for 7 year olds and up.

Allan Ahlberg’s The Children Who Smelled a Rat is another good choice for this age group.

And for the Christmas season…

Danny’s Crazy Christmas – Brianog Brady Dawson

Danny must get ready for Santa – all by himself! He must get carrots for Rudolf. He must clean the chimney! He must make space under the tree for his big gift from Santa.

Books for 8 year olds

The Gift if the Magi – P.J. Lynch

I’m a big fan of Irish illustrator PJ Lynch, his Gift of the Magi is a beautiful book and lovely for a Christmas gift.

If you are not familiar with the story of husband and wife Della & Jim and their sacrifices for each other’s Christmas present you will find this a gem.

Alfie Green and the Snowdrop Queen – Joe O’Brien

It’s Christmas Eve in Budsville and Alfie Green wishes it would snow.

There is one person who can help his wish come true – the Snowdrop Queen.

But she lives near the top of the Perilous Peaks in Arcania. This is a place too dangerous for his friends, the tools, who often help him on his adventures. So how can Alfie get there?

Books for 9 year olds

We would recommend Cora Harrison’s Drumshee Series including Millennium at Drumshee, The Secret of the Seven Crosses and World War II at Drumshee.

Date with Destiny (My Sister the Vampire) – Sienna Mercer

This is a funny, super-girly story with a vampire bite to it.

Sink The twins are back in Transylvania for Prince Alex and Tessa’s wedding, and to settle Ivy in to the Wallachia Academy.

Books for 10 year olds

Billionaire Boy – David Walliams

Joe has a lot of reasons to be happy. About a billion of them, in fact.  You see, Joe’s rich. Really, really rich.

Joe’s got his own bowling alley, his own cinema, even his own butler who is also an orangutan. He’s the wealthiest twelve-year-old in the land.

Books for 11 year olds

Private Peaceful – Michael Morpurgo 

Now a movie,  ‘Tommo’ Peaceful is recalling his childhood from those terrible battlefields.

He remembers his big brother Charlie taking him to his first day of school, the death of his father, his mum working hard to keep a roof over their heads and food on their table

Books for 12 year olds

The Giver – Lois Lowry
