Strandhill Playground

Strandhill Playground

We visited the brand new Strandhill Playground recently.  Located on the road down to the Sligo Airport, just on the left hand side beside the football pitches and tennis courts, I have to say it’s really nicely done with separate playgrounds completely for the younger children and older ones.

In the younger childrens playground, both my 4 year old and 1 year old enjoyed it, there’s lots and lots of different things to play on., including climbing frame, slides, swings, see-saw and some cure spinning things. I read there recently that Children love to spin and they will be determined to master this piece of equipment and stay on the longest.  Spinning is important in developing the vestibular system for children and is essential for their balance. So even if they spin until they are dizzy you can rest easy as you will know they are in fact improving their balance!!! So now you know!

There are also loads of murals on the ground for hop scotch etc, which really adds to the colourful aspect. It is also all fenced in, great for when you are there with more than one to watch!

In the separate older children’s playground, theres a great zip wire, rock climbing frame, slide and swings. There also seems to be a little bit more work on progress there too as some of it was cordoned off.

Three local groups decided to join forces and raise the substantial funds required for the project. Strandhill Community Park Ltd, Strandhill Community Development Association and Strand Celtic Football Club held numerous fundraisers to obtain the necessary €150,000 with funding support also received from Co. Sligo Leader Partnership. I understand there is some debt too, so they have a mural on a wall which encourages you to donate a couple of coins to ‘pay and play’. What a great achievement!

We’ll be back!
