Feels like the kids are only back in school after Christmas, and we are looking forward to the mid-term break already! Are you looking for ways to entertain them over the school holiday? Here’s our pick of the things to do with kids around Ireland, this February Mid Term, in association with Lough Key Forest & Activity Park.
Dublin & Wicklow
National Museum of Ireland
The National Museum of Ireland Archaeology, Decorative Arts & History and Natural History are all FREE to visit. They have a full program of events for families and children running across all 3 sites during the February Mid-Term.
Here are 3 we picked out:
- Museum of Natural History has a Drop-in Activity Natural History Spring Surprises on for the duration of the February Mid-Term.
- Museum of Archaeology has a Drop-in Activity Valentine’s Day: Medieval Love Tokens on Saturday 14th February.
- Museum of Decorative Arts & History has Mid-term workshops: Celebrating Chinese New Year on Thurdsday 19th February.
Junior Songschool run by Song School takes place Sat Feb 28th and is a chance for 8-12 year olds to spend some time at the National Concert Hall, learning about writing, performing and recording songs. Make music and new friends! Limited places so be sure to book early.
For something a bit different this mid-term, learn how to fish at the Ireland Angling Expo 2015, on Sat 21st & Sun 22nd February at the National Show Centre, Swords.
Highlights include the interactive family area, where angling workshops will be provided for children, teenagers and all the family. Youngsters will be invited to take part in free interactive games and there will be prizes all weekend long
Come along to The Ark this mid-term for the world premiere of Far Away From Me by Amy Conroy on February 12th. Also showing from Feb 17th to 20th at 2pm and 4pm. Suitable for children aged 6+. If your child is interested in learning more about theatre they can come along to Behind the Scenes which runs after the 4pm performance from Feb 17th to 21st. You will meet a member of the show’s creative team and find out about their role in this production and their chosen career.
On Feb 21st and 22nd musician Nick Roth welcomes the arrival of Spring with fun Spring Jazz Spells workshops for 2 to 4 year olds.
Head along to the Mid Term Art Day at Pine Forest Arts Centre. Set in the Dublin Mountains, surrounded by woods and streams, each child participates in a wide variety of Art and Craft activities. There is a lunch time walk, weather permitting, and careful supervision throughout the day. All materials are included in the price and children bring home all their treasures.
The ‘you can build it workshop’ takes place at Imaginosity on 13th & 15th Feb. Or celebrate Chinese New Year all week from 16th to 22nd Feb with workshops and activities. Workshops are on a first come, first served basis and are suited for 4+ years.
Their Mid-Term Kids Camp also runs daily from 17th to 20th Feb, suited for 4-7 years.
Take a trip to Powerscourt Estate, for a fantastic family day out. Climb the Pepper Pot Tower, visit the highest waterfall in Ireland, and discover trees that are hundreds of years old, and enjoy the children’s playground.
Or pop along to Tara’s Palace, Museum of Childhood at Powerscourt House, the centrepiece of which is Tara’s Palace, one of the greatest doll’s palaces in the world!
- Bake, a theatre show for kids, takes place at The Pavillion Theatre on February 21st.
- The National Print Museum have workshops for children running on February 19th, 20th and 21st.

Sligo Musical Society presents Sweet Charity – A Musical Comedy at the Hawk’s Well Theatre. Suitable for children aged 8+. The show runs nightly from February 17th to 21st.

- Roscommon Arts Centre are hosting a FREE Children’s Book Clinic in association with Children’s Book Ireland on February 21st. Perfect for young readers looking for advice on what to read next.

For a lovely family day, experience the magic at Brigit’s Garden. Four Celtic themed gardens based on the seasonal festivals surrounded by 11 acres of nature trail, ogham trees, children’s discovery trail, living willow play area, an ancient ring fort (fairy fort), Roundhouse and calendar sundial , the largest in Ireland. There is also a family-friendly cafe for lunch/refreshments after your walk.
The Galway Music Residency present the Con Tempo Quartet on 3 Saturdays at The Galway City Museum, with the first concert taking place on February 14th and then on February 21st and 28th.
Archaeology Workshops for children aged 7 to 12 years are on February 19th and 20th, Storytelling for children aged 5+ on February 20th and a Sean Nós Dancing display on February 28th.
All events are FREE but booking may be required for some.
Galway Atlantaquaria are open throughout the midterm break. Take a trip to see the eels, jellyfish, rays, sharks, crabs and more.
Or younger children can have fun at a Marine Science Workshop on February 19th & 20th. These are suitable for children aged 5 – 8 years and cost €20 for 1 day and €40 for 2 days with discounts for 2 or more children.

Galway Artist Kathy Ross is showing her work ‘Catching Dreams’ a collection of fairytale illustrations in NUIG over midterm. The show runs until March 6th.
