Museum of Country LIfe Mayo

The National Museum of Ireland Country Life in Mayo has some free events during September.  We especially like the On Sight Art Trail which runs until the end of September and makes art accessible to all and The Hoard & Sword: Echoes of the Vikings in Mayo Exhibition which runs until September 30th. If you would like to learn a new skill this September come along to the Knitting & Crochet Circle: where beginners and more advanced groups share patterns & skills on September 2nd and 16th. Families can also enjoy a Viking Jewellery Design Workshop on September 19th and learn about Lacemaking on September 20th & 21st.

The 2016 European Week of Sport and Physical Activity will be celebrated across Ireland from September 10th to 18th 2016. Open to everyone there will be local events running near you.

Walk4familes Ronald McDonald House

On the September 10th & 11th 2016, The Ronald McDonald House will be holding its annual #Walking4Families event to raise money to build a new 53 Bedroom Ronald McDonald House alongside the New National Children’s Hospital. FÉILE NA SEITEANNA 2016 (Letterkenny Set Dancing Festival)  is on in Letterkenny from September 16th to 18th.

Culture Night 2016 takes place on September 16th. From 5pm to 11pm arts and culture organisations will open their doors and offer entertainment and events for young and old. Find events near you.

Engineers Week takes place from February 28th to March 5th 2016 and there are a host of workshops and family friendly events taking place near you.

Sonia O Sullinvan is in the West of Ireland from March 2nd to 5th for celebrations to mark 100 Years of Irish Schools Athletics. The week will culminate in the All Ireland Schools and University Cross Country Championships on Saturday the 5th of March 2016 at Sligo Racecourse. 

Cleas ActWe’re loving the new TG4 series, Cleas Act, all about the Gaelscoileanna of Ireland, and the kids’ likes and dislikes. As well as chatting with presenters Eibhlín Ní Chonghaile and Stiofán Ó Fearaíl, the kids from each featured school get to sing, dance and tell jokes!   • The 2016 Achill St Patrick’s Day Parade celebrations start at 6am and continue for most of the day with traditional music, craic and spraoi for the family.
  • The 2016 Donegal Town St Patrick’s Day Parade is at 3pm on March 17th
  • The 2016 Letterkenny St Patrick’s Day Parade begins at 3pm on March 17th. It begins at Pearse Road and runs along main street finishing up in Market Square.
  • The 2016 Ardara St Patrick’s Day Parade takes place on March 17th
  • The 2016 Burtonport St Patrick’s Day Celebrations will be held in St Columba’s Community Centre from 12pm on March 17th
  • The 2016 Killybegs St Patrick’s Day Parade starts at 2pm on March 17th
  • The 2016 Bundoran St Patrick’s Day Parade is on March 17th at 3.30pm from Lough Melvin Filling Station.
  • The 2016 Moville St Patrick’s Day Pararde begins at 2.30pm on March 17th
  • The 2016 Sligo St Patrick’s Day Parade will begin at 12pm from Mail Coach Road and ends at the Mercy Convent.
  • The 2016 Boyle St Patrick’s Day Parade will start at 3pm on March 17th.

  • The 2016 Westport St Patrick’s Day Parade takes place on March 17th from 1.30pm. This year the parade has a 1916 Theme.
  • The 2016 Athlone St Patrick’s Day Parade start at 2.30pm from Golden Island. There will be free children’s entertainment in Civic Square from 3.15pm to 4.15pm on March 17th

Easter 2016 Events in the North West

Whats On for Families at Easter in the North WestIn Mayo, join Pinkie the Rabbit for the annual Easter Egg Hunt at Westport House & Gardens on March 27th.

Westport House & Pirate Adventure Park  is open throughout the Easter Break and provides the ultimate in family fun. Atlantic Coast Lifeguards have a Pool Lifeguard Course running in Mayo over Easter from March 28th to April 1st.

The Jackie Clarke Collection in Ballina, Co Mayo are hosting their annual Lucky Leprechaun Hunt on March 19th from 2pm to celebrate St Patrick’s Day.

Also in Inishowen, Carndonagh will host it’s Annual Easter Parade on Easter Monday, March 28th 2016 with fun for all the family guaranteed.

Tropical World in Letterkenny will re-open on March 18th just in time for Easter. Come and see beautiful butterflies, lemurs, owls, meerkats, parrots and many more tropical birds and animals.

The Quayside Shopping Centre in Sligo is hosting an Easter Egg Hunt on Easter Saturday and Easter Monday with free eggs and face painting for all the children!

Hawk’s Well Theatre Sligo have Snooze and Lullabies for Under 5’s on March 19th and for older children a Medieval Mayhem Brick Flicks Workshop on March 21st & a Minecraft Workshop on April 1st.

Tullyboy Farm in Leitrim will host an Easter Eggstravaganza on Easter Saturday, Sunday and Monday with ram racing, tug-o-war, animal shows and an Easter Egg Hunt.

Brick flicks are having a Medieval Mayhem Workshop for kids on March 22nd at the Roscommon Arts Centre.

In Roscommon, there will be heaps of Easter fun at Lough Key Forest Park this year. The Visitor Centre will turn into an Easter Spring Haven and there are lots of Easter activities including an Egg Hunt, Easter Storytime, Baking and Craft Workshops and Boda Borg.

On December 4th from 3-8pm, Westport House has added a Sensory Santa session to Winter Wonderland. For those children with autism and sensory disorders, we wanted to set aside some time where families could relax and enjoy a magical Christmas experience. We will turn up the lights and tone down the Christmas tunes. Santa will meet with families individually rather than arranging group visits with multiple families (we will pre-arrange time slots to shorten queues). Siblings are so welcome to join the festive fun too! Aside from meeting the big man, there’s lots to do! Roscommon Arts Centre presents ‘Little Light‘ by Monkeyshine Theatre on December 2nd. And ‘The Elf Factory‘ on December 10th & 11th. And on December 17th enjoy ‘Cuckoo Connolly’s Curious Clock Shop‘.

An Grianan Theatre in Letterkenny is hosting a Christmas Craft Fair on December 5th and has Christmas Music, Shows, Exhibitions and Films for families during December.

This December families can enjoy a guided trail under starlight, at the Celtic Garden Christmas Trail at the IOSAS Centre, Muff, and children can also take part in craft activities including cookie decorating.

The National Museum of Ireland – Country Life in Mayo has a Knitting Circle Winter Woolies event on November 6th. And on November 20th Crochet an Angel. The Get Up & Go For Your Dreams Event is a one day ticket-only event, for adults and teens (over 15yrs), and takes place in the Clarion Hotel Sligo, on October 17th 2015. There is a full schedule of inspiring speakers, from adventurers, to entrepreneurs, who are already ‘up and going’ in life, here to inspire and motivate adults and teens to do the same, to ‘get up and go – for your dreams’, no matter what your circumstances, age, abilities or interests.

The annual Westport Food Festival is on from September 4th to 6th.

The inaugural European Week of Sport will be celebrated in 31 countries across Europe from 7-13 September 2015. It aims to promote sport and physical activity for everyone, regardless of age, background or fitness level. The films are Fiddlesticks (Quatsch und die Nasenbarbande) and The Legend of Longwood, a selection of short films in our Short Tales programme, and an Adventure Venture workshop. The Festival will be at The Model, Sligo August 11th & 12th.

A few events that caught our eye include an Art From Nature Workshop on August 6th from 2.30 to 3.30pm for kids aged 7 to 12 years, Knitting Circle from 11am to 1pm on August 7th & 21st, come along and start a new project or finish on old one! Harvest Knots Workshop on August 20th from 2pm to 3pm. The Annual Donkey Day takes place on August 22nd from 11am to 4.30pm. And the museum celebrates Heritage Week with a Kite and Pole Demonstration and Heritage Talk on August 28th .

The Carrick On Shannon Children’s Book Festival – Wild Words runs on August 8th & 9th. From stories aboard the Moon River, to a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, to a crazy Monster Doodle with Niamh Sharkey, the festival is full to the brim of activities and events for every age group.

The Belmullet Gala Festival is on from August 9th to 15th 2015.

National Heritage Week 2015 has fun events for families and children nationwide from August 22nd to 30th.

All Island Whale Watch Day is on Sunday, August 23rd. Members of the public are invited to join the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group (IWDG) on one of 20 land-based whale watches being held at headlands around the Irish coast between 2:00-5:00 pm. Find your closest event.

Lough Key Forest & Activity Park have a Family Fun Day on July 5th 2015. All proceeds will go to Crumlin Children’s Hospital. Follow an inflatable trail around the park from 2pm to 5pm.

Féile Na Mara – Achill Island Festival of the Sea runs from July 4th to August 3rd 2015.

This June Bank Holiday enjoy the An Tostal Family Fun Festival in Drumshanbo, Co Leitrim. It runs from May 23rd to June 1st 2015.

The annual Carrick Carnival starts the June Bank Holiday weekend and runs until June 7th. Carrick On Shannon will come alive for this family friendly 10 day event.

Away with the Faries Fundraiser DayThere will be a Fundraiser in aid of St. Johns Ward on the June 7th in Strokestown Park House. It’s an “Away With The Fairies Fun Day“, inspired by brave little girl Isobel who was diagnosed with a Wilms Tumour at 21 months and 12 months after chemo finished has relapsed, she is currently about to start treatment again.

The Sligo So Food Festival runs from June 10th to 14th. It will incorporate music, food and fun for all ages.

Give It A Go Weekend in Achill Island gives you the opportunity to take part in various activities at reduced rates. It runs from June 13th to 14th.

Go wild in Erris, Co Mayo, on June 18th to 21st at the annual Erris Beo Festival which offers a warm welcome and unique events for the whole family.

Sea Sessions is back in Bundoran from June 19th to 21st. Pack the tents and come to see a great line up of music and art at this unique festival.

Mayo Day 2015 takes place Saturday 2 May for the very first time with events in towns and villages across Mayo and further afield in Ireland and even the world! Westport House are offering 50% off admission when you are wearing the Red & Green of Mayo!

The Laghey Blast Festival 2015 takes place 2nd and 3rd May, in Donegal, an event for all the family to enjoy with music and entertainment in abundance all weekend.

In Leitrim, the Shannon Blueway Adventure Festival takes place Friday 1st May – Sunday 3rd May 2015 with activities and entertainment to celebrate the start of the summer season on the Blueway. Paddle your own canoe (or Kayak, SUP, cycle, horse-ride, cruise, walk or trail-run) part of the new Shannon Blueway trial from Carrick-on-Shannon and Drumshanbo to Leitrim Village where activities will culminate with music and entertainment along the riverbank in Leitrim Village.

The Roscommon Lamb Festival runs Wed 29th April – Mon 4th May celebrating food, farming and heritage

Musuem of Country LifePreserving the Peace: Bandits, Robbers & Revolutionaries – Join historian Dr. Conor McNamara as he delves into the darker side of Ireland’s social history. Discover how political and social movements were exploited for the purposes of banditry, taking advantage of the breakdown in law and order to commit acts of criminal violence.

Lough Key Forest ParkThere will be heaps of Easter fun at Lough Key Forest Park from March 29th to April 12th. The Visitor Centre will turn into an Easter Spring Haven and there are lots of Easter activities including an Egg Hunt, Easter Storytime, Baking and Craft Workshops and Boda Borg is opening a new quest called ‘Step Up’.

Visit the National Museum of Ireland – Country Life this Easter and enjoy an Easter Painting Eggstravganza, Easter Fun Crafts, Easter Treasure Hunt and fun Tours.

Easter Hunt at Westport HouseJoin Pinkie the Rabbit for the annual Easter Egg Hunt at Westport House & Gardens on April 5th. The Pirate Adventure Park will be open during the Easter mid-term break with attractions and fun for all the family.

The Amazing Grace Festival 2015
opens on April 8th with a fireworks display at the Fishing Greens in Buncrana. It runs until April 12th and there will be daily family friendly events.

The Quayside Shopping Centre in Sligo is hosting an Easter Egg Hunt on Easter Saturday and Easter Monday with free eggs and face painting for all the children!

Tullyboy Farm in Leitrim will host an Easter Eggstravaganza on Easter Saturday, Sunday and Monday with ram racing, tug-o-war, animal shows and an Easter Egg Hunt.
