#1. The Tokyo Metropolitan Children’s Hall
This is definitely one of the best free things to do in Tokyo with kids! The Tokyo Metropolitan Children’s Hall is a six-storey building filled with fun activities. Kids can try roller-skating and unicycling on the rooftop playground, while your pre-schoolers will love the large climbing frames, wooden toys and ‘human-body maze.’ A super place for under 10s.
#2. Sensoji Temple
Situated in Asakusa, visiting Sensoji Temple is like stepping back in time. This is Tokyo’s oldest temple, and the street leading up to it is lined with interesting little shops and food stalls selling traditional treats like rice dumplings and cakes with red bean paste filling. Listen out for the temple bell as you explore — it’s one of the atmospheric touches that makes a visit here so memorable.

You don’t have to be a sushi connoisseur to enjoy Tsukiji! The famous wholesale fish market has relocated to Toyosu, but the lively outer market remains in Tsukiji, still packed with food stalls and small restaurants offering a genuine taste of Japan. It’s a great spot for an early-morning wander and a first taste of local street food with the kids.

A busy hive of activity, Yoyogi Park is a lovely place to spend some time, especially on Sundays. It has forested areas, large lawns and ponds. Great for people-watching — you’ll find locals practising tai chi, hip-hop dancing and even sword fighting here.

Tokyo has a great choice of beaches, such as the beautiful Izu and Ogasawara Islands, but the nearest one is Odaiba Beach, an 800-metre man-made beach in the heart of the city. You can’t swim here, but there’s always plenty of activity and events to keep everyone happy.

The gorgeous views of Tokyo from Rainbow Bridge might just take your breath away! At night, the bridge glitters with glorious colours.
The Odaiba neighbourhood is a busy hub of entertainment, restaurants and striking architecture, with several shopping malls and family-friendly museums nearby worth exploring together.
#8. Explore Meiji Shrine
Meiji Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken. You’ll take the most stunning photos here as you explore the expansive grounds, admire the trees, the sake casks and the beautiful, elaborate shrine buildings.

#9. Picnic in Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden
Just to the west of downtown Tokyo, Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden is a gorgeous urban oasis, especially popular in spring when the cherry trees blossom. There’s a small entry fee, but it’s well worth it — bring some lunch and enjoy it in the English Garden.

Running along the waterfront, Makuhari Seaside Park features lots of wandering paths perfect for walking or cycling. This is a great place to relax with the kids, and you’ll also find:
