1. Visit the Zoo
High Park Zoo is a free mini-zoo home to llamas, deer, buffalo, bison and a variety of birds and animals. It sits inside High Park, which also has plenty of natural areas and walking trails, playgrounds, sports facilities, an educational Children’s Garden and a Trackless Train — easily a full day out on its own.
2. Free Active Learning
Every Friday, Kids360 Active Learning Centre opens its doors for two hours of free play and activities. It’s a great chance for parents and kids under 4 to connect, join in free play, and try out fun weekly programmes.
3. Petting Zoo and Woods
Riverdale Farm is a free petting zoo right in the heart of downtown Toronto, with benches where you can settle in for a picnic lunch. It’s open all year round, hosts seasonal activities, and admission is always free.
4. Harbourfront Centre
Whatever you’re looking for, the Harbourfront Centre is likely to have it. Ice-skating in winter, family-friendly concerts in spring, summer festivals, film screenings, outdoor dancing and food — and most of the programming is completely free. Well worth checking out with the family.
5. Explore a Waterfront Trail
Walk the 2.5 km stretch of waterfront trail from Confederation Park to Van Wagner’s Beach and enjoy restored beaches and sand dunes along the way. You’ll find plenty of cafés and restaurants en route, plus interpretative panels describing the area’s rich natural and cultural heritage.
6. Winter Ice-Skating in Toronto
Two of the best free ice rinks in Toronto are at City Hall and the Harbourfront Centre. Bring your own skates, or rent a pair if you don’t have any. The Natrel Rink is a particular favourite — set right on the shores of Lake Ontario, with hot food and drinks available at the rink-side restaurant.

7. Confederation Park
Confederation Park is a huge natural parkland containing the Wild Waterworks, a water theme park featuring Canada’s largest outdoor wave pool (entry fee applies). It’s a great spot for a picnic and a stroll, and also has outdoor attractions like go-karts, batting cages and mini golf.
8. Take a Streetcar to the Beach
Hopping on a streetcar is a cost-effective way to tour some of Toronto’s most famous streets on your way to the Beaches, an east-end Toronto neighbourhood. In summer, there’s often a choice of free, family-friendly beach concerts, such as the Jazz Festival at Woodbine Park.
9. Centre Island Ferry Ride
