Swedish Food to Try With the Kids
You’ll probably already know meatballs (köttbullar) from trips to IKEA, usually served with gravy, mashed potatoes and lingonberry jam. But there’s plenty more classic Swedish food worth introducing the kids to while you’re in Stockholm:
- Knäckebröd — crispbread that can come with almost any topping.
Swedish shrimp (räkor) — really delicious, usually served cooked in their shells, which you peel off to get to the juicy interior.- Open sandwiches — popular open-faced sandwiches, such as the shrimp sandwich (räksmörgås).
- Waffles (våfflor) — delicious topped with whipped cream and cloudberry jam.
- Raggmunk — grated, fried potato cakes topped with lingonberries and crispy fried bacon.
- Prinsesstårta — the famous layered sponge cake with jam, almond paste and whipped cream, covered in traditional green marzipan.
- Pickled herring (sill) — you may have tried pickled herring before, but Sweden has a huge variety worth sampling.
- Pea soup and pancakes (ärtsoppa och pannkakor) — a simple, unpretentious dish traditionally eaten on Thursdays.
- Cinnamon rolls (kanelbullar) — twirled pastries sprinkled with pearl sugar. Sweden even has a national day dedicated to them, on 4 October.

Generally, it’s a relaxed atmosphere, quick or casual service, and something that keeps kids interested — whether that’s a fun theme like Koh Phangan’s tuk-tuk, watching pizza being made at Vapiano, or simply having outdoor space to let them run around, like at Lasse i parken or Chutney.
Which of these is best for a quick, budget-friendly family meal?
Restaurant Rice and Creperie Fyra Knop are both described as good value and easy-going, making them solid options if you want something simple without a long sit-down meal.
Are there restaurants with outdoor seating for families?
Yes — Chutney has a nice outdoor eating area, and Lasse i parken is built around a garden setting, both good choices if you want the kids to have a bit more space.
What traditional Swedish foods should we try with the kids?
Cinnamon rolls (kanelbullar), waffles with cloudberry jam, and open shrimp sandwiches (räksmörgås) tend to go down well with children, alongside the more famous Swedish meatballs.
