Got an old book that’s seen better days, or a stack of paperbacks nobody’s reading anymore? Don’t recycle them just yet. Here are 4 fun book crafts for kids that turn old pages into something new to make, wear or give away. Each one uses simple materials, so they’re perfect for a rainy afternoon or a quiet weekend project.
#1. Make Heart Strings
This lovely project uses pages from an old book to cut out sets of hearts, which are then strung together to make a pretty garland.
As well as the book, you’ll need scissors, sewing thread, wrapping paper and tape. It’s a simple project that works well for younger children with a bit of help, and the finished strings look great hung across a bedroom or window.
#2. Create Bookmarks and Tags
We love this idea for turning old books and dictionaries — the kind you might otherwise put in the recycling bin — into bookmarks and gift tags.
Start by making one or two templates out of cardboard. Once you have your shapes, use the templates to draw around and cut the old book pages into bookmarks or tags of different sizes. It’s a great way to get a few different designs from a single book.
#3. Make Paper Pinwheels
These paper pinwheels are a fun way to use up old book pages, and look brilliant as party decorations or popped on top of cupcakes for a book-themed celebration.
You’ll need an old book, some pins, a pair of pliers and some sticks to pin your finished pinwheels onto.
