Got a stack of old books gathering dust, or a battered dictionary nobody reads anymore? Before you recycle them, why not turn them into a fun craft project with the kids? Here are 4 fun book crafts for kids that are simple, budget-friendly, and a lovely way to give old pages a new lease of life.
#1. Make Heart Strings
This lovely project from Dottieangel’s blog shows you how to make strings of hearts cut out of pages from an old book.
As well as the book, you’ll need scissors, sewing thread, wrapping paper and tape. The instructions on the blog are clear and easy to follow, making this a great one for beginners.
#2. Create Bookmarks and Tags
We love this idea from Vakuoli, who takes old books and dictionaries destined for recycling and turns them into bookmarks and tags.
Once you’ve cut a template or two out of cardboard, you can use them to trace and cut out the old book pages, giving you bookmarks and tags in whatever sizes you like.
#3. Make Paper Pinwheels
This is a nice project from Better Homes & Gardens for making paper pinwheels out of old book pages. They originally used them to top cupcakes for a book-themed party, but they’d look just as good on a windowsill or in the garden.
You’ll need an old book, some pins, a pair of pliers, and some sticks to attach your finished pinwheels to.
#4. Make Google-Eyed Bookmarks

You’ll need coloured card or construction paper, scissors, a ruler, glue, and a pen and pencil. You could use craft googly eyes instead of drawing them on, but we like that drawing them lets each child design a completely unique bookmark face.
