Take a trip to the Corlea Trackway Visitor Centre, where you can see a 2,000-year-old wooden trackway and learn about the unique plant life of the surrounding bog habitat. The Royal Canal Greenway is one of the longest off-road greenways in Ireland, following the Royal Canal from Dublin all the way to Longford. It’s a lovely, largely flat route that’s well suited to family walks and cycling, with plenty of options to pick a shorter stretch nearer Longford Town if little legs get tired.

If the weather turns, head indoors to Longford Megabowl for bowling, amusements and a kids’ play area — a handy option for a rainy day out.
#5. Derrycassan Wood
Derrycassan Wood sits on the shores of Lough Gowna in Dring and offers three different walking trails: the Nature Trail (1.2km), the Walled Garden Walk loop (2.3km) and the Main Avenue Walk (3.2km). Pack a picnic and enjoy the lakeside setting once you’re done exploring.
#6. Ballinamuck Visitor Centre
For history-loving families, the Ballinamuck Visitor Centre sits in the middle of the site of the Battle of Ballinamuck, fought on 8th September 1798. It was the last pitched battle fought on Irish soil and one of the final episodes of the 1798 Rebellion — a memorable stop for older kids studying Irish history.

The Ardagh Heritage and Creativity Centre is home to exhibitions on Irish mythology, early Christianity, local writers, and life in the area a century ago. Creative Ardagh also encourages visitors to get hands-on, with family events, creativity mornings, group classes and drop-in art days held throughout the year.
#8. Newtowncashel and Lough Ree
Newtowncashel makes for a great family day out, combining an award-winning village with leisurely walks and a unique, protected ecosystem along the shores of Lough Ree.
#9. Midland Karting
Get into the driver’s seat at Midland Karting, part of Action Sports, with karting on a purpose-built 1.1km track. It’s located about 2.5 miles outside Edgeworthstown, Co. Longford, on the main N55 (Granard/Cavan road) — a fun one for older kids and teens with a need for speed.
#10. Aughnacliffe Dolmen
“How did they get it up there?” is the question most visitors ask when they see Aughnacliffe Dolmen, an impressive Stone Age portal tomb.
A pathway leads from the village of Aughnacliffe to this striking megalithic tomb, which has two capstones, or roof stones. The dolmen is linked in local legend to the story of Diarmuid and Gráinne, and is said to be one of the places they rested while fleeing from Gráinne’s fiancé, the legendary hero Fionn MacCumhaill.
The monument stands on private farmland, but visitors can reach it on foot via the pathway. There is livestock in the surrounding fields, so please close all gates behind you.
