Stressed Out Students: 6 Tips to Maintain a Stress-Free Smile During Exams

Exam season is a pressure cooker for students — and it turns out that stress doesn’t just affect concentration and sleep, it can affect oral health too. Teeth grinding, mouth sores, dry mouth and gum irritation are all common side effects of exam stress, often overlooked while everyone’s focused on revision timetables.

According to Dr Paul O’Dwyer, group clinical adviser at Dental Care Ireland: “Teeth grinding, mouth sores, dry mouth and gum disease are just some of the ways that stress can wreak havoc on your teeth and gums. Throughout the busy exam period, it is vital to ensure a balanced diet, drink plenty of water and maintain a basic oral health routine.”

Here are 6 tips to help stressed out students maintain a stress-free smile during exam times.

#1. Book A Check Up With Your Dentist

Prevention is better than cure, and a regular dental check-up is one of the easiest ways to avoid unnecessary pain and disruption to study time.

Regular check-ups allow a dentist to catch issues like tooth decay, teeth grinding and gum disease early. A dentist can also check for signs of wisdom teeth, which typically appear between the ages of 18 and 24 and can cause discomfort. Inflammation or infection around wisdom teeth (known as pericoronitis) can be genuinely distracting during exam season.

#2. Stick To Your Routine

Stress can affect the immune system’s response, which can show up as gum inflammation or unexpected mouth sores such as ulcers or cold sores.

Even in the middle of exam prep, it’s worth keeping a basic dental routine going at home: brush twice a day for two minutes with fluoride toothpaste, floss daily, and drink plenty of water.

#3. Maintain A Well Balanced Diet

Keeping a balanced diet can slip during exam season, but it matters just as much for a healthy mouth as it does for a focused mind.

Fresh fruit, vegetables and milk are rich in vitamins C and D, both important for healthy gums. Try to go easy on fruit drinks and smoothies — they can look healthy but are often high in sugar, contributing to tooth decay. They can also spike blood sugar briefly, leaving energy levels lower once the sugar wears off. Water or milk are better everyday choices.

#4. Be Aware Of Teeth Grinding

Increased anxiety and stress can lead to teeth grinding or clenching, known as bruxism.

Common signs include worn, damaged or sensitive teeth, a sore jaw in the morning, or grinding noises during sleep (often first noticed by a family member). A dentist can check for signs of bruxism, help identify possible causes, and suggest options such as a mouth guard if needed.

#5. Drink Plenty of Water

Stressful situations like exams and presentations can lead to a dry mouth, which means less saliva — and less saliva means a higher risk of tooth decay.

Drinking plenty of water supports healthy saliva production, which naturally washes away leftover food particles. Sipping tap water regularly throughout the day is a simple habit that helps.

#6. Chew With Caution

Under exam stress, it’s common for habits like nail biting or chewing on a pen to creep in. Beyond the risk of plastic splinters, these habits can also chip teeth or damage fillings — an unwelcome distraction right before an exam.

Wishing all students the best of luck in their upcoming exams, along with a stress-free smile and a healthy mouth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can exam stress really affect my teeth and gums?

Yes. Stress can trigger teeth grinding, dry mouth, mouth ulcers and gum inflammation. It’s a genuine side effect of exam pressure, not just an old wives’ tale.

What’s the easiest way to protect my teeth during exam season?

Stick to the basics: brush twice a day, floss daily, drink plenty of water, and try to eat regular, balanced meals even when revision schedules get hectic.

How do I know if I’m grinding my teeth at night?

Common signs include a sore or tight jaw in the morning, sensitive teeth, or a partner/family member noticing grinding sounds during sleep. A dentist can confirm this and advise on next steps.

Should I see a dentist before exams even if nothing feels wrong?

It’s a good idea. A quick check-up can catch small issues — like early gum irritation or emerging wisdom teeth — before they turn into a painful distraction during study time.
