What is ‘Ian’ about?
Ian was born with cerebral palsy. Like every child, he simply wants to have friends and to play. But unlike the other children in the playground, he has to work much harder just to get access to it.
Every time he tries to join the other kids, an invisible wind sweeps him back through the fence, his body disintegrating into pieces before recomposing on the outside, alone again. Discrimination, bullying and plain indifference all conspire to keep him apart from the playground he loves. But Ian doesn’t give up easily — and the film’s message about persistence and belonging is exactly why it resonates so deeply with children and parents alike.

The real story behind the film
The film is inspired by a real nine-year-old boy also called Ian, who lives in Argentina and has cerebral palsy. Ian can’t move or talk, but according to his mother Sheila, he is “very intelligent” and communicates using a special computer that tracks his eye movements to select letters. He attends a mainstream school, is in 4th grade, and has plenty of friends.
When Sheila realised that the need for inclusion went far beyond any one playground, she started a campaign to change how people think and talk about disability. She wrote a book and founded Fundación Ian, working to shift attitudes towards people with disabilities on a much bigger scale.
She then approached MundoLoco, a leading digital animation studio in Latin America, with the idea of turning Ian’s story into an animated short film that could carry the message of inclusion to a global audience.
Why inclusion matters
Ian is not alone. More than a billion people around the world live with some form of disability. Genuine inclusion — in classrooms, playgrounds and communities — makes society richer, more diverse and more just for everyone.
‘Ian’ went on to make the shortlist for the Best Animated Short Film category at the 2019 Academy Awards, bringing its message of inclusion to an even wider audience.
