Dursey Island and the Cable Car
The Dursey Cable Car experience is an absolute must if you have a head for heights. Travel over Dursey Sound to Dursey Island, where you can stroll around and admire the truly breathtaking ocean views, have a picnic while watching the many birds — including puffins — that live on the island, and if you’re lucky, spot some whales and dolphins too.
Millstreet Country Park
Millstreet Country Park has loads to offer families for a great day out during its seasonal opening. There are lovely picnic spots, plenty of toilet facilities (including baby-changing), walking trails that are buggy and wheelchair accessible, plus a deer farm, archaeological sites, themed gardens, outdoor games and much more.

Gougane Barra National Park
Gougane Barra National Park, Ireland’s first national park, is a great option for a day out in Cork and is a beautiful destination in any season. There are walking and cycling trails, and on a fine day, a picnic area to make the most of it.
There are six different walking trails to suit all levels of fitness, along with a looped 3km scenic drive offering spectacular views of the deep valley and its walled sides.
Glengarriff Nature Reserve
Glengarriff Nature Reserve offers a selection of trails. Take the gentle riverside route, or for the more adventurous, the steeper climb up to Lady Bantry’s Lookout for the views.
Glenbower Woods
Glenbower Woods in Killeagh is set just off the road. Head into the forest or follow the network of footpaths to enjoy the serenity of the trees and river, with fun wooden bridges to cross and little huts along the way to rest.

Passage to Blackrock Castle Cycle Lane
A fun family cycling route in Cork runs along the old railway line from Passage to Blackrock Castle. This trail is popular with families and has previously hosted an annual family fun cycle event, and it’s suitable for young and old alike.
Ballyhass Lakes
Ballyhass Lakes in North Cork has an aqua park as well as lakes for fishing, with equipment and tuition available. If you fancy trying something different, kayaking and raft-building activities are also on offer.
Rosscarbery Lagoon
Rosscarbery Lagoon is a fantastic place for a water adventure with the kids. During the summer months, the Lagoon Activity Centre offers paddle-boat, row-boat and kayak hire.
Life jackets are provided and all ages are catered for. There’s also a lovely café where you can grab a bite after your exertions.
Cork Beaches
- Inchydoney Beach, Clonakilty. A sandy beach on Inchydoney Island, a few miles from Clonakilty. Public parking and toilets are provided adjacent to the beach, with lifeguards on duty in the summer season. Access is by ramps and steps.
- Warren Beach, Rosscarbery/Clonakilty. A sandy beach at the mouth of Rosscarbery Bay, accessed by turning off the N71 at Warren Cross. There’s a pitch and putt club nearby, plus public parking, toilet facilities and lifebuoys, with lifeguards on duty during the bathing season.
- Tragumna Beach, Skibbereen. A sandy, sheltered beach about four miles from Skibbereen, reached by turning off the R596 at Abisdealy Bridge and following signs for Tragumna. Public parking, toilet facilities and lifebuoys are provided, with lifeguards on duty during the bathing season.
- Barleycove Beach, near Schull. Barleycove sits on the Mizen Peninsula, 22 kilometres southwest of Schull, between two headlands with an extensive sand dune system. Public parking, toilet facilities and lifebuoys are provided, with lifeguards on duty during the bathing season.
Fitzgerald’s Park and Playground
One of the loveliest playgrounds and parks in Cork is Fitzgerald’s Park. Bring a picnic, let the kids let off steam at the playground, and there are several child-friendly places of interest within walking distance for if the skies open — including Cork Public Museum, the Stone Corridor in UCC, the Lewis Glucksman Gallery, the Lifetime Lab and more.
