Wexford Art Centre
Stop by Wexford Art Centre to see their latest exhibition. Many galleries in Wexford don’t charge an entry fee, so a visit with the kids to look at some local art can make for a lovely, low-cost outing — and children’s programming or family-friendly activities are sometimes run alongside exhibitions, so it’s worth checking what’s currently on before you go.
There are plenty of other galleries around the county worth exploring too, including smaller local spaces in Wexford Town and further afield along the coast. Kids love looking at pictures, and a gallery visit might even inspire an exhibition of their own back home. A friend’s son, a rather opinionated six-year-old, was once told by a classmate that he was “colouring outside the lines” — his reply was, “A painter in Spain always painted outside the lines. His name is Picasso!”
Book Fun
Wexford Book Centre and other local bookshops sometimes host free events for kids, such as storytelling, puppetry or face painting — it’s worth checking their social media pages for what’s coming up.
Most children love to read or be read to, so bring them along to one of the local Wexford libraries — a great, free way to spend an hour or two, whatever the weather.
Keep an eye out for regular free library events and activities too — you’ll find plenty of family-friendly listings on MyKidsTime.
Playgrounds in Wexford
There are lots of great playgrounds in Wexford, many set in extensive grounds, so bring along a picnic and a ball for a great day out.
A lovely day trip is Kilmore Quay. There’s a fantastic playground right beside the car park, overlooking the beautiful Saltee Islands — a great first stop before exploring further.
Once the kids have had their fill of the playground, take a walk down the pier. You’ll often spot seals near the docked fishing boats, which children love watching. Round off the visit with the local fish and chips, or an ice cream, as an optional treat.
Head to the Beach!
Wexford’s coastline is dotted with fantastic beaches, and there’s something for every kind of day out. Long sandy beaches are great for a run-around in both winter and summer, while stony beaches are ideal for rock pooling and crabbing.
Pick a different beach each time to explore. Buckets and spades are optional, but make sure you leave some pocket room for shells and stones — little collectors will thank you.
