Outdoor Spots in Carlow
Oak Park Forest Park

Kilbrannish Forest Recreation Area
The Kilbrannish Forest Recreation Area offers two different loop walks to suit different energy levels. The Windfarm Loop is around 3km on a good surface with some uphill sections, making it manageable for families with younger children. The Kilbrannish Forest Loop is longer, at about 5km, and takes roughly two hours to complete. Both loops reward walkers with lovely views over the surrounding lowlands and Mount Leinster on a clear day. There’s a picnic site and car park close by.
Clashganny Lock
Clashganny Lock, south of Borris, is a popular spot for a summer dip. The towpaths here are also great for cycling, and canoe or kayak trips along the River Barrow are worth looking out for — keep an eye out for taster sessions in the area.
Bagnelstown Outdoor Heated Swimming Pool
Bagnelstown has a heated outdoor 25m swimming pool with a paddling pool alongside, typically open through the summer months. Opening dates and times can vary from year to year, so it’s worth checking locally before you plan a visit.
Carlow Town Playground
This modern playground has swings, slides, bridges and plenty of benches for parents too — there’s something here for children of all ages.
Brownshill Dolmen

The Brownshill Dolmen is a striking megalithic monument, with a huge granite capstone believed to be one of the heaviest of its kind in Europe. The massive slab rests on two portal stones flanking a door stone, and it’s thought to date back around 5,000 years, with experts believing religious rites once took place here.
It’s located on the Hacketstown Road just outside Carlow town. The walk from the small, free car park takes you through open fields and makes for a pleasant outing, and kids will love exploring in and around the ancient stones.
Bagnelstown Fairgreen Playground
Centrally located in the town, this playground is a handy stop before or after feeding the ducks along the River Barrow. There are toilets, picnic tables, benches and parking all close by.
Duckett’s Grove and Carlow Town Park
Duckett’s Grove and Carlow Town Park are both great choices for a family walk or an afternoon flying kites, thanks to their large open spaces.
