Best Outdoor Places in Roscommon for Families
Lough Key Forest Park
There’s nothing like Lough Key Forest Park on a sunny day for a family picnic. There’s plenty to do here, including a forest canopy walk, a kids’ jeep safari, and a network of walking trails to follow, so you could easily spend the whole day outdoors. Picnic tables are dotted throughout the park, and there’s a café on site serving food if you fancy a break from your own packed lunch.
Derrylahan Loop Walk
Start your exploration around the Resource Centre at Derrylahan, which offers seven signed walking routes through the surrounding countryside, all interconnecting so you can mix and match depending on how far little legs want to go. One popular route heads east from the centre before looping back north and west into the heart of this ancient landscape.
From the Derrylahan Resource Centre, the trail follows grassy pathways, bog tracks and old boreens — an enjoyable and eventful walk for all the family.
Strokestown Park
Strokestown Park in Strokestown has beautiful parklands where kids can run around and fly a kite, along with lovely gardens including a Victorian rose garden. The park runs family events throughout the year, so it’s worth checking what’s on before you visit.
River Shannon
A large stretch of Roscommon’s eastern border is formed by the River Shannon, and there’s plenty to do along its banks. Depending on what your family fancies, try:

Loughnaneane Park
A gentle stroll around Loughnaneane Park is one of our favourite family outings. There’s a large recreational area right beside the ruins of Roscommon Castle, a striking 13th-century Norman castle.
The park is also home to a crannog, known locally as the Hill o’ Bones, along with a wildflower meadow, a bird walk, a lake feature and grassy mounds — all brilliant spots for kids to explore. You’ll also find a children’s playground and outdoor gym equipment, plus a car park. Admission and parking are free.

Boyle Pleasure Grounds
We love a visit to Boyle Pleasure Grounds, a lovely spot where you can sit and relax, watch a game of soccer on the all-weather pitch, or let the kids loose in the enclosed, safe playground. There’s also a pleasant walk along the Boyle River.
This is where the military band once played, and from here you can look across to the front of King House.
