Looking for a fun free game to play with your child? The Button Game is a simple, no-cost activity that keeps kids entertained while quietly helping them practise colour recognition, sorting and fine motor skills. All you need is a handful of buttons and a few spare minutes.
It’s a great one for a rainy day, works well for a mix of ages, and is genuinely fun for both smaller and older kids — though fair warning, everyone gets a little competitive once the timer starts!

How To Play The Button Game
You Will Need
- A selection of different coloured and sized buttons
- A tray
- A timer (a stopwatch or kitchen timer works fine)
Instructions
1. Empty out all the buttons onto the tray.
2. Take it in turns to match pairs of buttons. You can make a pair by matching colour, size, shape — or all three!
3. Each person gets a minute, and at the end of the minute, jot down how many pairs they matched.
4. See if they can beat the best score, or beat their own score next time round.
5. You will be amazed at how competitive everyone gets!
