Homemade granola is one of those recipes that looks fancy but is genuinely simple to make. This easy homemade granola recipe takes just a few pantry staples, bakes in about 20 minutes, and keeps well in a jar for up to two weeks — making it a handy, healthier alternative to shop-bought cereal.
Making your own granola might seem like extra effort when there are so many ready-made options on the shelf. But many shop-bought granolas and cereals are packed with more sugar, salt or unfamiliar ingredients than you’d like. When you make your own, you know exactly what’s gone into your family’s breakfast, and you can tailor it to suit their tastes — swapping nuts, dried fruit or flakes as you like.
Serve it with milk and fresh fruit, or sprinkled over yoghurt, for a healthy, filling breakfast or a quick snack any time of day.
Quick and Easy Homemade Granola Recipe
This recipe makes enough to serve 10, and the granola will keep for up to two weeks if stored in a screw-top or kilner jar.
Ingredients:
- 6 fl oz honey
- 4 fl oz sunflower oil
- 8 oz oat flakes
- 3 oz barley flakes
- 3 oz wheat flakes
- 3 oz raisins or sultanas
- 2 oz hazelnuts or flaked almonds
- 2 ¾ oz wheatgerm and/or millet flakes
- Dried fruit, e.g. apricots, cranberries, blueberries, pineapple, coconut
Method:
1. Preheat your oven to 180°C.
2. Mix the oil and honey together in a saucepan and heat gently, just enough to melt the honey. Mix well into the combined flakes and nuts, then spread the mixture thinly onto a baking sheet.
3. Bake for 20 minutes, turning frequently and keeping an eye on the edges so they don’t catch. It’s ready when golden and toasted all over.
4. Once cooled, mix in the raisins or sultanas, your chosen dried fruit, and the wheatgerm. Serve with milk, yoghurt, honey, fresh fruit or a fruit compote.
