Long before “community engagement” became a marketing buzzword, Mykidstime was already putting it into practice — and it got noticed. Business commentator Niall Devitt of TweakYourBiz once picked out Mykidstime as a standout example of how a small or medium-sized enterprise (SME) can use Facebook well, without a big budget or a big brand behind it.

At the time, a handful of images shared on our Mykidstime Facebook page went quietly viral among our community of parents. The result was a big jump in engagement with our readers, and — just as valuable — greater visibility with the businesses and brands who work with us. That kind of two-way reach, from parents through to partners, is exactly what a good SME social media strategy should deliver.

It’s also how we were able to build early momentum for projects like the Mykidstime Store, an online marketplace for parents, helping bring on board some of our first suppliers directly through conversations that started on Facebook. The same approach helped us connect with new advertisers for seasonal features, like our Christmas Gifts Guide.

Niall’s case study on the story is worth a read if you’re curious about the detail behind it. One line from his piece has always stuck with us, because it sums up our approach to social media so well:

“Again, they’ve proven that you don’t have to be a significant brand or have a big budget if you apply the right approach on Facebook and truly value your community.”

None of this would have happened without our Facebook community itself. The real credit belongs to the parents who liked, shared, commented and generally showed up for us — then and now. If you’re one of them, thank you.
