#1. Rossmore Forest Park
Located 3.5km south west of Monaghan Town on the R189, Rossmore Forest Park has several cycling trails and six walks to choose from, ranging from 0.8km (30 mins) to 8km (2.5 hrs) in length. Particular favourites include the Castle Trail, which passes the ruins of Rossmore Castle, the fish hatchery, the walled garden and a beautiful 500m yew tree avenue; the various lake trails; and the Nature Trail, which runs through the woods near the car park and has several picnic sites and marked spots of interest. This trail is paved and accessible for wheelchair users and buggies.
Rossmore Forest Park also has a brilliant adventure play park for children up to 12 years of age, with swings, zip lines, climbing frames, see-saws, log piles, willow tunnels and bee hive huts to explore. And keep an eye out for the giants — Roddy den Drum overlooks the lake, and Big Ross is said to be asleep under the playground, with only his head and feet visible!

Lough Muckno Leisure Park in Castleblayney is a lovely spot for a family walk, with walking trails, nature walks and a picnic area. It’s open all year round, making it a handy option whatever the season.
#3. Carrickmacross Looped Walks
There are five varied looped walks to try in the market town of Carrickmacross, including an easy 4km town and lakeside walk, a 9.5km leafy ramble taking in castles, forts and an ancient monastery, and the more challenging 32km Pilgrim’s Way Tin Church trail past caves, lakes and countryside.

This 4km walk crosses from one side of Monaghan town to the other, following the tow path of the abandoned Ulster Canal. Along the way you’ll pass bridges and locks, taking in a mix of rural and urban landscapes.

This 4km looped walk around the picturesque Emy Lough suits all levels of fitness, with a mix of minor roads and a lakeshore path.

There are a number of scenic walks through the 65 acres of wetlands just outside the town of Ballybay. These wetlands are recognised as regionally important for wintering migratory bird life, including the Whooper Swan and the Siberian Wigeon.
