Free Things to Do in Louth With Kids
Ravensdale Forest
One of our favourite activities is simply getting out for a long walk or a hike – it’s bound to put some colour in the kids’ cheeks! Bring a flask of hot chocolate and some snacks to keep everyone going.
The Ravensdale Loop at Ravensdale is roughly an hour-long trail passing the river, bridges, large trees, standing stones and old coach roads. Start at the car park and head up the hill on the left-hand side (looking up) for approximately 400m, where you’ll join an old forest road and cross a bridge before continuing to the next junction.
Veer right and follow the forest road. Just below you are the Ravensdale standing stones – well worth a short detour of 10 to 15 minutes. Back on the main route, the trail drops down on the right, following an old forest track as it winds down to the valley bottom. Near the county road, the trail turns right and follows the river, crossing it by a footbridge, before bringing you back to the car park.

Townley Hall
We love the Belnumber Wood Nature Trail, one of the trails at Townley Hall. The trail starts at the first car park, where there are also picnic benches, and follows the famous King William’s Glen up towards Tullyallen. One side of the walk borders the Townley Hall golf club, the other the public road, taking you through the narrow wood also known as Belnumber Wood.
Walk Part of the Táin Way
Catch a section of the Táin Way at Carlingford. The Táin Way is a looped 40km National Waymarked Way starting and finishing in Carlingford.
Four kilometres of the route pass through Slieve Foye Woods, offering spectacular views down to Carlingford and across the lough to the Mourne Mountains.

Clogherhead
You don’t have to wait for sunshine – head to the beach with coats, hats and wellies and take a walk along the shore. Bring fishing nets and explore the rock pools. Bear in mind the kids will want to get wet, so pack towels and a change of clothes, even if you’re not planning on swimming!
The long pier and castle ruins at Clogherhead are one of our favourite spots to explore, and one of the best free things to do in Louth.

Make sure to check out your local library and see what classes and events run throughout the year. Your local branch is a wonderful – and free – resource for families.
Many branches run or host parent-and-toddler groups, storytelling sessions, arts and crafts classes, book clubs, chess clubs, and other games and activities.
There’s also free computer access and the option to borrow books and DVDs. For a change of scenery, why not try a different library branch to your usual one?

Arts centres such as the Droichead Arts Centre run interesting programmes of events throughout the year, so it’s worth keeping an eye on their schedule – some exhibitions and activities are free of charge.

Another great place to visit is the County Museum Dundalk, which runs a fascinating programme of events all year round, including some aimed at younger visitors, with free admission.
