We’re lucky to have some fantastic beaches in County Waterford, and when the sun makes an appearance (or even when it doesn’t!) there’s nothing better than packing up the buckets and spades and heading for the coast. Whether you’re after gentle paddling for little ones, a longer stretch for a proper walk, or somewhere with a bit more adventure for older kids, Waterford has a beach to suit. Here are some of our favourites for a great family day out.
Woodstown
Woodstown beach runs for miles along the western shore of Waterford Harbour. It’s a great spot for swimming when the tide is in, making it a lovely day trip when the weather is kind. It’s also popular for long walks and picnics, and the beach is rich in sea shells, which little ones love collecting or using to decorate sandcastles. Parking is available nearby.
Dunmore East
Dunmore East has half a dozen sheltered, picturesque coves. The main beach, Councillors Strand, is great for swimming and snorkelling, and is divided into two by a rocky outcrop. The beach is patrolled by lifeguards, and facilities include public toilets and a car park.
Tramore Beach
Tramore Beach stretches for around five kilometres with beautiful views across Tramore Bay. It’s a sandy beach that’s very safe for swimming, staying shallow for a good distance, especially when the tide is in. Tramore is also a great spot for beginners to try surfing, with lessons and equipment available locally, along with sailing lessons and sea kayaking. A wander along the sand dunes is a must while you’re there.
The Guillamene Cove
The Guillamene is on the west side of Tramore Bay, in the sunny south-east of Ireland. Two sets of steps lead down into the water, along with a few popular jump-off spots. The water here is deep when the tide is in and lovely and clear. It’s a beautiful location, with views across the bay to the Metalman. Children need close supervision here. There’s a small changing area, a large car park, toilets, and some seating and picnic tables.
Ballyscanlon Lake
Located about 6.5km west of Tramore on the road to Dungarvan, Ballyscanlon Lake is a quiet, peaceful freshwater lake near a wood. Adult supervision is needed if the kids want to swim. Facilities include a car park, a picnic site, and forest and lakeside walks.
Copper Coast
The beautiful Copper Coast is a UNESCO Global Geopark, with a range of brilliant beaches perfect for families, including:
- Kilfarrasy
- Annestown
- Boatstrand
- Bonmahon
- Stradbally
Clonea Strand
Clonea Strand is a beautiful beach about 5km outside Dungarvan, with lifeguard cover during the summer months, making it a safe choice for swimming. It’s long and sandy, with great views and lovely walks. There are toilets at both ends of the beach and a cold shower at the main entrance.
Ardmore
Located near the village centre, Ardmore beach is about a mile long and popular with families thanks to its safe bathing waters. There are also two Green Flag beaches nearby, at Ballyquin and Goat Island. Activities available here include kayaking, canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding and even rock climbing.
