Looking for a Halloween recipe the kids can actually help make? These gruesome witches’ fingers are a fun Halloween recipe for kids that looks properly spooky but is genuinely simple to put together. With just a handful of ingredients and a bit of pastry-shaping fun, you’ll have a batch of cheesy, crispy “fingers” ready in no time.
Kids love getting hands-on with this one — rolling out the pastry, sprinkling on the cheese, and shaping each finger before it goes in the oven. It’s a great rainy-afternoon activity as well as a tasty party snack.
Hint: make extra, because these disappear fast once they come out of the oven!

Make Your Own Witches’ Fingers
Ingredients
- 1 packet ready-made puff pastry, defrosted
- 4 oz grated cheddar cheese
- Almonds or pumpkin seeds (for the witchy nails)
- 1 egg, beaten (for an egg wash, optional but gives a nice golden finish)
Method
1. Preheat the oven to 200°C.
2. Cut your defrosted block of pastry into 4 equal squares.
3. Roll out one portion of pastry thinly, and sprinkle some grated cheese all over it.
4. Fold the pastry into the centre in thirds lengthways, then fold in from the top and bottom in thirds again.
5. Now cut into strips roughly finger width and length in size. You can use a fork to create “knuckle lines” if you like!
6. Repeat with the remaining pastry.
7. Brush the witches’ fingers with egg wash and place an almond or a pumpkin seed (for the witchy nail!) into the top, then bake for approximately 10–15 minutes.
8. Remove from the oven and leave to cool on a wire tray. Enjoy!

Tips for Making Witches’ Fingers
- If anyone in the family has a nut allergy, pumpkin seeds work just as well as almonds for the “nail” and give the same effect.
- Keep an eye on the oven towards the end of baking — pastry thickness can vary, so check from about 10 minutes onwards.
- These are best served the same day, still slightly warm, for maximum crunch.
FAQs About Witches’ Fingers
Can I make witches’ fingers ahead of time?
You can prepare and shape the fingers ahead and keep them covered in the fridge until you’re ready to bake, so all that’s left to do on the day is brush with egg wash and pop them in the oven.
Can I freeze witches’ fingers?
Yes, you can freeze the unbaked, shaped fingers on a tray, then transfer to a freezer bag once solid. Bake from frozen, allowing a few extra minutes in the oven.
What can I use instead of almonds for the nails?
Pumpkin seeds are a great nut-free alternative and give a similarly spooky “nail” effect.
Do I have to use puff pastry?
Puff pastry gives the best crisp, flaky finish, but shortcrust pastry will also work if that’s what you have on hand.
