Healthy Breakfast Ideas: Dan’s Crunchy Granola

If you’re on the hunt for healthy breakfast ideas that go beyond sugary cereal, this one’s a keeper. Dan’s Crunchy Granola is simple to make, easy to store, and endlessly customisable — swap in whatever nuts, seeds or dried fruit your family loves.

Homemade granola also means you know exactly what’s going into it, which is a nice bit of reassurance on busy school mornings. Make a batch at the weekend and you’ve got breakfast sorted for the week ahead.

Dry Ingredients

  • 400g Oats
  • 60g Pumpkin Seeds
  • 40g Desiccated Coconut
  • 30g Chia Seeds
  • 50g Flaked Almonds
  • 1 Tbsp Cacao Powder (optional)

Wet Ingredients

  • 60g Agave Syrup
  • 80g Coconut Oil

Method

1. Preheat your oven to 150C / 300F.

2. In a large bowl, combine all the dry ingredients and mix well.

3. Melt your coconut oil in a microwave or over heat, add the agave syrup, and stir.

4. Pour the wet mix over the dry mix and stir, making sure all the dry ingredients are coated.

5. Transfer the mix onto two baking trays lined with parchment paper. Don’t pack it too high — a thin, even layer bakes best.

6. Bake for 60 minutes, then leave to cool for 20 minutes before serving. Enjoy!

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does homemade granola keep?

Once fully cooled, store your granola in an airtight container or jar. Kept in a cool, dry place, it will stay crunchy and fresh for a good couple of weeks.

Can I swap the nuts or seeds?

Yes — this recipe is very forgiving. Sunflower seeds, chopped walnuts, or dried fruit like sultanas or chopped apricots all work well in place of, or alongside, the ingredients listed.

Is this granola nut-free?

As written, the recipe includes flaked almonds, so it’s not nut-free. Simply leave these out or replace them with extra oats or seeds if you need a nut-free version.

What’s the best way to serve it?

Granola is lovely with milk, yoghurt, or spooned over fruit. It also makes a handy topping for smoothie bowls or a crunchy snack on its own.
