Nothing says Christmas quite like the smell of mulled cider warming on the stove. This recipe, adapted from Rachel Allen’s Rachel’s Favourite Food for Friends, is a non-alcoholic version that the whole family can enjoy together — perfect for cosy evenings, family gatherings, or after a chilly walk to see the Christmas lights.
It takes just a few minutes to make, uses simple store-cupboard spices, and fills the kitchen with the kind of festive scent that makes a house feel like Christmas.
Serves 6 to 8
Ingredients
- 4 whole cloves
- 1 lemon, cut into quarters
- 750 ml good-quality apple juice
- 100 g muscovado sugar
- 1/2 orange, cut into quarters
- 1 cinnamon stick
- pinch of ground nutmeg
Method
1. Stick one clove into each lemon quarter, then put everything into a saucepan and heat gently, stirring to dissolve the sugar.
2. Keep on a very low heat without boiling for 5 minutes.
3. Remove from the heat, then take out the orange and lemon chunks before pouring the mulled cider into mugs.
Serve warm, and let little ones help pick out the cinnamon stick or lemon wedges before pouring — it’s a nice way to get kids involved in the kitchen.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this hot mulled cider recipe alcoholic?
No — this version is made with apple juice rather than alcoholic cider, so it’s completely alcohol-free and safe for children and the whole family to enjoy.
Can I make this ahead of time?
Yes. You can gently reheat leftover mulled cider on the stove or in the microwave. Just avoid letting it boil, as this can affect the flavour.
What can I use instead of muscovado sugar?
Brown sugar or honey can work as a substitute if you don’t have muscovado sugar to hand, though the flavour will be slightly different.
Can I add other spices?
Yes — star anise or a few allspice berries work well alongside the cloves and cinnamon if you’d like to experiment with the flavour.
