Fun Things to Do in Louth
#1. Stephenstown Pond Nature Park & The Dairy Maid Coffee Shop
The Stephenstown Pond Nature Park & The Dairy Maid Coffee Shop at Knockbridge makes a fun family day out and is an ideal venue for picnics. You can feed the ducks and swans, and have a play at the playground on site.
The coffee shop is situated in the 19th Century Burns Cottage, once the home of Agnes Burns/Galt and her husband William, sister of Scottish Poet Robert Burns.
#2. Drogheda Museum
Drogheda Museum, Millmount is one of County Louth’s most significant heritage sites. The Museum houses a wide variety of artefacts of local and national importance. Chief amongst the attractions is the unique collection of Guild and Trade Banners.
Popular exhibits at the Millmount Museum include an authentic 18th century Irish folk kitchen, dairy and laundry, and the Irish History Room which details the major events in Ireland’s history. There’s a fantastic view of the entire Boyne Valley from the top of the fort. Admission fees apply.
#3. Monasterboice
Home to an impressive collection of ruins, at Monasterboice there is an old graveyard, two churches and a sundial. There is a well-preserved round tower which stands at 28m high, as well as two spectacular high crosses: Muirdeach’s Cross and the West Cross, noted as being the tallest in Ireland.

#4. Townley Hall
At Townley Hall, the River Boyne forms the boundary between counties Meath and Louth, while just upstream in the bend in the river lie the tumuli of Dowth, New Grange and Knowth which collectively form Bru na Boinne.
The forest is home to red deer, red and grey squirrels, badgers, rabbits, hares and foxes. The are two suggested trails in the wood, ranging in length from 1-2 kms.
#5. County Museum Dundalk
The County Museum in Dundalk is located in a lovingly restored late 18th Century warehouse. This award-winning Museum celebrates the story of County Louth’s rich social and cultural history from the pre-Christian era up to the present day.
The Museum also offers an extensive programme of talks, workshops, concerts and temporary exhibitions throughout the year.

#6. Clogherhead
The long pier and castle ruins at Clogherhead are one of our favourite places to explore! The headland has a great walk from the village along steep sea cliffs to the nearby picturesque harbour called Port Oriel.
#7. Droichead Arts Centre
Be sure to check out what’s on at Droichead Arts Centre in Drogheda which is a great arts venue offering family shows, comedy, music, theatre and more.

#8. Ravensdale Forest
Ravensdale Forest, 8km north of Dundalk, has a picnic area and 3 marked trails in the forest: the Tain Trail, the Ring of Gullion, and the short but interesting Ravensdale Loop.
The forest is rich in archaeological features, such as the standing stones just a short detour off the Ravensdale Loop, and has many interesting features including bridges and old driving roads.

#9. Castle Roche
Castle Roche near Dundalk is one of the most striking Anglo-Norman castles in Ireland and can be viewed for miles around. Located on a rocky hilltop, it commands wonderful views of the surrounding countryside.
Legend has it that Lady Rohesia promised her hand in marriage to the architect if he completed the castle to her satisfaction. When he went to claim her hand, she had him thrown from one of the windows, which to this day is known as the ‘murder window’. You can walk to it through farm gates (be sure to close them after you).

#10. Battle of the Boyne
Strictly speaking in Meath, but so close to the border of Louth that we have sneaked it into our list. The Battle of the Boyne Visitor Centre is located in the recently restored 18th century Oldbridge House, which is on the battlesite.
As well as the Visitor Centre, there’s an audio visual show, original and replica 17th century weaponry displays, laser battlefield model, tea pavillion, toilets and walled garden. There are self guiding walks through parkland and the battlesite. Partial access for people with disabilities, so please check in advance.
