Fed up with Monopoly and Connect 4? Junior 30 Seconds is a “quick thinking, fast talking” board game that’s become a firm favourite for family game nights and rainy afternoons. We asked one of our MyKidsTime testers, Jill, to try it out with her daughters — here’s our board games review of Junior 30 Seconds.
Product tested – the lowdown
Junior 30 Seconds is a description-based board game aimed at primary school aged kids, though it works just as well for a mixed-age family group, a birthday party, or any get-together big or small.
Each player on a team has 30 seconds to describe 5 words on a card to their teammates — without naming the words or giving any letters. Words can be nouns, verbs, and more; for example, one card might have cat, glass, run, burp and tickle.
The set includes an hourglass timer to count down the 30 seconds, a set of description cards, counters, and a board to move around as your team scores points.
There’s also an adult version, 30 Seconds, suitable for ages 12+. The adult edition is built around names and topics people are generally familiar with — celebrities, sport, music, politics, places, books, TV, film, and well-known shops and brands.
What the tester thought
We love this game. It’s easy to get the hang of the rules, and it’s surprisingly quick to get everyone properly into the swing of it. Each card has a good mix of easy and tricky words, so there’s a nice balance between quick wins and genuine challenge.
Depending on how well your team scores on a card, you add or subtract points to work out how many spaces to move — first team to reach the end of the board wins.
Honestly, the board itself is almost beside the point. The real fun is watching your teammates scramble to guess the words before the timer runs out. You don’t even need to split into teams if numbers are tight — you can simply take turns being the word-describer instead.
Fern, aged 9, told us: “Love this game so much. It’s cool and I love that you have to beat the timer. You think it’s going to be easy to describe the words but it isn’t so easy when time is running out.”
Her older sister, aged 13, enjoyed it just as much, and when a friend came to visit, we managed two teams of two — which turned out to be even more fun.
