My son wanted a Percy Jackson themed birthday party, and nothing else would do but a Medusa piñata! Here’s how we made one at home, with a few simple materials and a lot of enthusiasm.
Why we made our own Medusa piñata
When we started looking for Medusa piñata ideas, we found plenty of general piñata tutorials but very few for Medusa herself. The ones we did find looked quite complicated, and we needed something simple — my son has more enthusiasm than patience when it comes to craft projects, and a straightforward method meant he could stay involved from start to finish.
What you’ll need
- A balloon
- Newspaper, torn into strips
- Cooked paper-mâché paste
- Thick art/craft paper
- Sweets or small treats to fill the piñata
- Sticky tape
- White paper (optional, for the final layer if you plan to paint)
How we made it
1. Build the base. We covered a blown-up balloon with strips of newspaper dipped in paper-mâché paste, building up several layers and leaving it to dry fully between coats.
2. Let it dry (and don’t panic if it cracks). We hung the piñata up to dry, and by the time we came back to it, the balloon inside had burst and the shell had cracked open on its own. This turned out to be a happy accident — it gave us a ready-made opening for filling the piñata, rather than having to cut one ourselves.
3. Fill it. We popped a good handful of jelly snakes inside (very fitting for Medusa!) and taped the cracked opening closed again with sticky tape.
4. Add the face and snakes. Rather than painting a face on, we made a simple Medusa mask from thick art paper and attached paper snakes to it for hair. More snakes were cut out and attached to the back of the head too. It wasn’t perfectly neat — there were a few bald patches around the back — but from a small distance (and to a room full of excited kids with sticks) it looked great.
5. Tip for painting. If you’d rather paint your piñata than cover it in paper, make sure your final papier-mâché layer is plain white paper. It gives you a much better surface for the paint to show up on.
The whole project cost very little — just the price of the sweets, really — and gave us hours of fun making it, plus a few very satisfying minutes of the boys smashing it apart at the party. A brilliant, low-cost centrepiece for a Percy Jackson or Greek mythology themed party.

Do I need a special piñata mould to make a Medusa piñata?
No — a standard balloon works perfectly as the base. Once it’s covered in enough layers of papier-mâché and left to dry, you have a solid shell ready to fill and decorate.
What can I fill a Medusa piñata with?
Any small sweets or treats work well. Jelly snakes are a fun themed touch for Medusa, but any bag of mixed sweets will do the job.
How long does it take for the papier-mâché to dry?
Drying time depends on how many layers you use and the conditions in your home, so it’s best to leave plenty of time and check the shell feels fully hard and dry before filling and decorating.
What if the balloon shell cracks before I’m ready?
It’s not a problem — as we found out ourselves! A crack gives you a natural opening to fill the piñata. Just tape it closed again once your sweets are inside.
Can I paint the piñata instead of using paper decorations?
Yes — just make sure your last layer of papier-mâché is plain white paper so the paint shows up clearly and evenly.
