Frequently Asked Questions
How long does homemade pesto keep?
Stored in a jar in the fridge with a thin layer of olive oil on top, homemade pesto will keep well for 4–5 days.
Can I freeze pesto?
Yes, pesto freezes well. It’s a handy way to use up a glut of basil, and small portions (an ice cube tray works nicely) can be defrosted as needed for a quick meal.
Can I make pesto without pine nuts?
Yes. If you don’t have pine nuts to hand or need a nut-free option, walnuts, cashews, or sunflower and pumpkin seeds all work well as a substitute.
What can I use pesto for besides pasta?
Beyond pasta, pesto is great stirred through roasted vegetables, spread on sandwiches or toast, spooned over grilled chicken or fish, or mixed into salad dressing.
