Real Mums Share Their Beautiful Post-Baby Bodies in New Mothercare Ad

From surgical scars to stretch marks, post-baby bodies are amazing. Your body has grown, nurtured, delivered, fed and kept your baby safe – it deserves to be celebrated, not shamed. That’s why we still love this Mothercare campaign, where real mums shared their beautiful, unfiltered post-baby bodies with the world.

Have you ever watched a film or an ad where a “new” mother snaps straight back into her skinny jeans or a skimpy swimsuit within weeks of giving birth? Frustrating, right? For most women, that simply doesn’t happen – and images like that do nothing but chip away at your self-confidence.

The early weeks and months of motherhood are a hormonal journey unlike any other, and feeling pressure to look, feel or dress a certain way on top of everything else is a stress no new mum needs. That’s exactly why this Mothercare campaign, which set out to challenge tired stereotypes about new mums, struck such a chord with parents everywhere.

“Body Proud Mums” was the runner-up out of more than 90 entries in Transport for London and City Hall’s Women We See competition, which encouraged advertisers to move away from gender stereotypes and create more positive, inclusive work.

The campaign features ten portraits of real mums and their post-birth bodies, shown across TfL’s network and social media. The aim was simple: to help mothers feel more positive about their bodies by pushing back against unrealistic ideals and the pressure to “lose the baby weight.”

Photographer Sophie Mayanne, who pledged not to digitally manipulate skin in her work, shot the images and described them as depicting “the raw and incredibly emotional experience of childbirth.”

“The aim is for mums of all shapes and sizes to be able to identify with these photos in one way or another, and to feel more confident.”
