Roblox has been around for a number of years and continues to be one of the most popular online platforms among tweens, teens — and even a good few adults too. If your child has mentioned it, or you’ve spotted it on their device, here’s what parents should know about Roblox.
What is Roblox?
According to the Roblox website, it is the world’s largest interactive platform for play, letting kids imagine, create, and play together in immersive 3D worlds. All the games and experiences on Roblox are created by the players themselves.
Once a player signs up and creates an avatar, they’re given their own piece of virtual real estate along with a building toolbox known as “Roblox Studio.” Players can monetise their creations to earn “Robux,” Roblox’s virtual currency, which can then be used to buy avatar accessories or extra abilities in one of the millions of experiences on the platform.
Players can play, chat, and collaborate on creative projects together.
How does Roblox work?
Roblox isn’t a single game — it’s a platform where people share games they’ve built using Roblox Studio, and where social interaction happens through multiplayer play.
Roblox describes itself as a “social platform for play.” Players can comment and chat with other players inside a game, and also chat with friends elsewhere on Roblox.
The Roblox art style sits somewhere between Minecraft and Lego. Players can create their own games or jump into existing ones — and some of the most popular games on the platform can have hundreds of thousands of people playing at the same time.
What parents need to be aware of
When you create an account, you’re asked for a birthdate, because under-13 accounts have different security and privacy settings to older teens’ accounts.
Every account has the option to activate a “Parent PIN” — a 4-digit code you can use to lock changes to your child’s account settings. You’ll find it under the Security tab on the Settings page, accessed via the gear icon in the upper-right corner of the site.
There’s no strict age limit under Roblox’s Terms of Service. Under-13s are advised to have parental supervision, but there’s no parental consent step required at sign-up.
Because Roblox is really thousands of separate multiplayer games built by different creators, there’s limited control over who else is playing any given game, or their age. Chat filters can be activated to block inappropriate words and phrases, but as with any online social platform, children can still be targeted by people looking to exploit that openness.
Players can block other users and report abuse directly within Roblox. Roblox sits on the board of the Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI) and states it complies with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). Tips for parents if your child is using Roblox
#1. Familiarise yourself with the platform
As we always recommend, try it yourself first. This is one of the best ways to understand what your child is actually doing on it. Activate the Parent PIN, and make sure you know how to check account history — where you can see games your child has created, private message history, friends and followers, and trading or purchase activity.
#2. Stay near while they are playing
It’s a good idea to either play alongside your child or at least stay nearby and keep an eye on what games they’re playing and who they’re interacting with.
#3. Make sure they’re aware of the risks
Your child should understand that adults use Roblox too, and that not everyone online is who they say they are.
#4. Talk to them about chatting safely
If your child chats on Roblox, talk to them about not chatting with strangers and — as with any internet app or site — never giving out personal information online.
#5. Keep having the internet safety conversation
Remind your child to only befriend people they actually know in real life, and to tell you straight away if they see anything strange or receive any upsetting messages.
