1. Powerhouse Museum, Sydney
With more than 250 interactive exhibits spanning a huge range of topics, such as science, design, space, technology, transport and social history, there’s a lot to explore and learn at the Powerhouse Museum of Applied Arts & Science. Kids will love the high number of buttons waiting to be pushed and the outdoor Cogs’ Playground and can take part in regular workshops and classes at the Museum Discovery Centre.
2. Australian Fossil and Mineral Museum, Bathurst
If your young one has developed a fascination with all things related to dinosaurs, head out west to Bathurst and let your budding palaeontologist discover Warren Somerville’s incredible collection of fossils and minerals. The Australian Fossil and Mineral Museum features a T-rex skeleton, fossil dinosaur eggs and a lot of fossils in amber. There’s more than enough on display to get your child’s imagination running wild!
3. The Australian Museum, Sydney
While in Sydney, stop by the country’s very first museum and your kids will marvel at its collection of natural history displays and travelling exhibitions. The Australian Museum’s dinosaur exhibition and specimens of Australia’s unusual animals will have your little one’s wanting to learn more.
4. Newcastle Museum, Newcastle
If visiting Newcastle, the state’s second largest city, there’s plenty to see and do at the Newcastle Museum! Offering a range of permanent and special exhibitions, your whole family will be enthralled. Here you’ll be able to learn about the area and it’s fascinating history and treasures and take part in regular events and workshops.
5. Wollongong Science Centre and Planetarium, Wollongong
The Wollongong Science Centre and Planetarium is a super place if your little one is excited by all things to do with science and the stars! Head to Wollongong on the South Coast and get hands-on with two floors of interactive exhibitions. The museum’s daily planetarium displays will also be a winner with kid’s of all ages!
6. Australian National Maritime Museum, Sydney
If you find yourself in Sydney’s beautiful Darling Harbour, make a stop at the Australian National Maritime Museum for some nautical fun! Older kids will love exploring the submarine and destroyer ship which are permanently moored outside the museum, while little ones will be enjoy the Mini Mariners Play space filled with interactive displays and activities.
