Are you looking for places to get the kids outdoors in Offaly ?With the vagaries of Irish weather we have to grab the opportunities to get out whenever we can. Here are 8 great places in Offaly to get outdoors with kids.
#1. Lough Boora
The park at Lough Boora in Leabeg has acres of reclaimed bog with walks, ponds, cycle tracks, a visitors pavilion, other interesting shelters from either sun or rain, sculptures and a bird viewing hide.
There is a bike hire facility with all shapes and sizes including kiddy carriers.
#2. Slieve Bloom mountains
Picnic benches are provided at the entrance to most forest trails and at viewing points. The Slieve Bloom Mountains in the south of the county have numerous walking trails, walking festivals and walks most Sundays.
#3. Charleville Castle
The Castle at Charleville near Tullamore is popular for a family walk. Why not try some of the Coillte ones such as Garryhinch near Portarlington? The grounds of the Castle are also a good spot for flying kites (and if you are looking for other good places to fly kites, there is always your local GAA, soccer or rugby pitch, when not in use for a match or training of course).

Down by the Grand Canal at Edenderry is a good place to take the kids cycling as well as Tullamore Ferbane, Banagher and numerous villages in between. Barge trips can also be booked.

#6. Lloyd Town Park
An excellent modern playground in Tullamore, with swings, slides, bridges and skate park, bowls for the older generation. Parking is available in front of the park.
This playground is located close to the centre of town and has lots of equipment for different ages.

Classes and camps for archery, kayaking and orienteering are provided by True Fitness near Portarlington.
Pitch & Putt can be played on courses in Tullamore, Banagher, Clara and Ferbane. There is an outdoor pursuits centre in Birr where camps take place regularly and activities include abseiling, kayaking, canoeing and more.
