Finding things to do with children before they start school can be difficult, or if you are new to an area. So we have put together some suggestions of things to do with Pre-Schoolers in Kildare.
Visit the playground! There are some excellent playgrounds in Kildare and most of them have dedicated sections for smaller children. Kilcullen Playground, with its water and sand play area,is a sure success with preschoolers, but be sure to bring a change of clothes/put wellies on them!
Visit the library! The junior section of the library is a great way to spend an hour or two reading and choosing books, also your pre-schooler can join the library and choose their own books to borrow. Some libraries also host weekly story time and/or a parent and toddler group. Check out your local library for upcoming events and news.
Go swimming! Children under 3 swim for free at the K-Leisure pools in Naas and Athy. The Naas venue also has a great kiddies pool. You can also pay as you go at The Gables swimming pool Newbridge.
Sign up for a class! Check out our list for little people – its never too early to pick up a hobby! All Things Crafty, Newbridge allow use of their craft studio mid-week, which can be an ideal way of doing the art work, without the mess at home!
Visit a play centre! The best for babies and toddlers is Joeys, Naas. This is a small play-area suited for 0-6yrs, and can easily see your little ones play, as you relax on the couches and enjoy a cuppa! The food is good too, and they run regular classes and activities. Many good friendships have started here! Most of the play centres run toddler mornings Mondays to Fridays, with reduced entry fee, and scheduled activities. Jungle Den, Naas also gives you a free cup tea/coffee with toddler morning entry.
Join a local Parent & Toddler group! There are many local groups throughout Kildare that meet weekly. Parent and Toddler groups are a great way of young children to mix with children their own age and for parents to meet other local parents!
If you have a free day mid week a big advantage with getting out and about with preschoolers is that you can visit places at “off peak” times when older children are at school and popular places aren’t as busy!
Go for a walk! Many of the walks in Kildare are perfect for preschoolers, to run, collect leaves, stones, etc. and play hide and seek. Pop on the wellies, and head to the Curragh plains with a truck or football, but just beware of the sheep droppings!
Pet-Farms are a great outing with preschoolers. Most only open from Easter, with the exception of Clonfert Pet Farm, Maynooth, which is open at weekends for winter months. They have an indoor play area too, and a Parent & Toddler group.
And here we also have some ideas for entertaining preschoolers at home.
