We all know and love Dublin Zoo, but it’s not the only place in Ireland where kids can get up close to some amazing creatures. From kangaroos and lemurs to eagles and pot-bellied pigs, there are wildlife parks, bird of prey centres and pet farms all around the country just waiting for a family visit.
Here are some of our favourite spots for a super animal day out.
#1. Fota Wildlife Park
See a kangaroo hop right in front of you or get close to a ring-tailed lemur! Fota Wildlife Park is just 20 minutes from Cork city and makes a brilliant family day out.
Whether you’re after outdoor activities for the kids, a holiday camp idea, or simply somewhere to enjoy a sunny day, Fota has plenty to keep children and parents entertained.
Don’t miss: the specially constructed Cheetah Run, where you can watch the speed and power that makes the cheetah such an incredible predator in the wild.
#2. Secret Valley Wildlife Park
Award-winning Secret Valley Wildlife Park is the only wildlife park in the south-east of Ireland, less than 1.5 hours from Dublin and conveniently close to Waterford, Kilkenny, Carlow and Wexford.
Donkeys, llamas, alpacas, sheep and goats roam the outdoor paddocks, while the purpose-built animal shed is home to bunnies, guinea pigs, lizards, raccoons, prairie dogs and their resident lemurs. Whatever the weather, there’s plenty to discover at Secret Valley.

#3. Eagles Flying
For excitement, close encounters and brilliant photo opportunities, head to Eagles Flying, home of the Irish Raptor Research Centre and Ireland’s largest sanctuary for birds of prey and owls.
Watch eagles, hawks and vultures fly right over your head or land beside you — you’ll never have been this close to a bird of prey before. There are more than 100 birds on site, some with wingspans of over three metres, and if you’re lucky you may get the chance to fly or touch one during a show. For those who prefer more cuddly company, there’s also a large supervised pet zoo to visit.

#4. Reptile Zoo at Funtasia Waterpark
This fun, hands-on exhibit features some of the world’s most fascinating species, from large pythons to tarantulas, toads, tortoises and even caiman crocodiles. The team at Funtasia Waterpark guides visitors through the exhibits, sharing the story of each animal, its role in nature and how it hunts and survives.
After the guided tour comes the best part — the Animal Encounter Zone! This is your chance to test your courage by holding a Burmese python or boa constrictor, or facing your fears with a tarantula or snapping turtle.
All animal interactions are carried out by trained professionals using carefully selected animals from Reptile Village Zoo.
#5. Glendeer Pet Farm
A visit to Glendeer Pet Farm (five miles west of Athlone, exit 13 off the M6, following signs for Drum) is a truly interactive experience, where children can feed, pet and hold some of the animals.
Residents include deer, pigs, llamas, emu, ostrich, goats, donkeys, sheep and much more, including monkeys, wallabies and a tortoise — plus plenty of newborns each year, from kid goats to llama and puppy arrivals.
You don’t even need a fine day to visit, thanks to indoor and outdoor picnic and play areas, including a suspended indoor play area, with much of the animal housing also undercover. Afterwards, relax in the coffee shop with fresh tea, coffee and homemade treats.
