Walt Disney was, by most accounts, a shy man who battled a lack of confidence early in life. Along with his brother Roy, he founded the Walt Disney Company in 1923. The first film he ever produced was Alice’s Wonderland, a silent black-and-white short that marked the beginning of an era that has touched the hearts of millions of families since.

Mickey Mouse came along a few years later — the warm-hearted little mouse who’s always ready to help his friends and stand up for what’s right. Mickey was designed in 1928 and was the first cartoon character ever to appear with synchronised sound, a moment audiences must have found thrilling at the time. He remains the mascot of the Walt Disney Company to this day.

But enough history — let’s get to the films. Here are our chosen classic Disney movies to watch together as a family.

#1. Bambi (1942)

A little fawn named Bambi learns early in life about the harsher side of nature, and through adventures with his friends, finds the courage to face the challenges that come his way.

This one tops our list because, beneath the beautiful animation, it’s a gentle lesson for kids: you don’t always get what you want straight away, and sometimes you have to be brave to get through the hard parts.

#2. The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (1977)

A must-see for all the family. This classic about three witches accidentally summoned back to life — and the chaos they cause while trying to restore their youth — has stood the test of time. And wherever there’s a talking cat, you know something wild is about to happen. It’s not animated, but it’s a brilliantly fun family comedy to watch together.

#4. Brother Bear (2003)

An animated film built around themes of brotherly love and respect for all living things. When the main character makes a choice that could have been avoided, the spirits transform him into a bear. The transformation sequence is a real standout — the colours and sound design still hold up beautifully. A genuinely feel-good watch for all ages.

No list of classic Disney movies would be complete without this masterpiece. Released in 1940, Fantasia is a collection of eight segments set to sweeping classical music, conducted by Leopold Stokowski. Mickey Mouse appears in one of the most beloved segments as the Sorcerer’s Apprentice, with a few magical mishaps along the way.

Its sequel, Fantasia 2000, followed in 1999 and is also a wonderful watch for the whole family. It keeps Mickey as the Sorcerer’s Apprentice but adds seven new segments, with conductor James Levine leading the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Are these movies suitable for younger children?

Most of the films on this list, such as Winnie the Pooh and Fantasia, are gentle and suitable for young children. A couple, like Bambi and Hocus Pocus, have moments that may be intense for very young or sensitive viewers, so it’s worth watching along with them, especially the first time.

Where can we watch these classic Disney movies?

Availability varies by streaming platform and region, so it’s best to check your usual streaming service or Disney’s own platform to see what’s currently available where you are.

Is this a good rainy day activity?

Yes — a family movie afternoon is one of the easiest, cosiest ways to fill a rainy day at home, with no planning or equipment required beyond snacks and a blanket.
