Donore Shore, near Multyfarnham on the shores of Lough Ennell, is a lovely spot for a picnic. It’s one of our favourite places to head to on a sunny day.

Westmeath Way
Try a section of the Westmeath Way for a family walk — the quieter sections along the canal are especially good with younger children.

Belvedere House Gardens and Park
Belvedere House Gardens and Park, on the shores of Lough Ennell near Mullingar, has acres of parkland to explore. Enjoy the Parkland walk as well as the walled and fairy gardens, and let the kids loose in one of the four play areas. Belvedere runs seasonal events throughout the year, so it’s worth checking what’s on before you go. An admission fee applies.
Tullynally Castle & Gardens
Tullynally Castle & Gardens, just outside Castlepollard, has beautiful gardens and a lovely café. Follow the main path to the flower garden, where the kids will love visiting the llamas. There’s a Tree Trail and a Treasure Trail to explore, and a tearoom in the courtyard for afterwards. An admission fee applies.
Dún na Sí Amenity & Heritage Park
The Amenity & Heritage Park at Dún na Sí is a fantastic place to bring children. They can meet the ancient Irish warrior Lugh, who stands guard over Dún na Sí with his magic spear, then wander through the parklands and wetland reserve, spotting art installations along the way. There’s a fully equipped children’s playground next to the Catoca Café, which serves coffee and lunch.
Mullaghmeen Forest
Head to Mullaghmeen Forest and take your pick of the trails to suit all abilities. There are three looped walks, plus a picnic area and gardens to enjoy afterwards.
Lough Owel, Lough Ennell, Lough Derravaragh, Lough Ree
Westmeath is truly the Lake County, with attractive shores and activities around Lough Owel, Lough Ennell and Lough Derravaragh. To the west of the county lies the shore of Lough Ree on the Shannon, along with the picturesque village of Glasson and the town of Athlone.
Royal Canal
The Royal Canal passes through many Westmeath towns and villages, including Mullingar and Ballynacarrigy. It’s a great walk for spotting barges and boats — and waving at everyone who passes!
Mullingar Playground
Mullingar Town Park is a public park in Bellview, in the town centre. It has a variety of playgrounds, a large pond near the centre, a swimming pool, a glider, swings and an enclosed children’s area.
Coosan Point Playground
The playground at Coosan Point, near Athlone town, is a great place to let little ones burn off some energy after a trip to the shops. It’s always hard to choose between feeding the ducks and going on the swings at Coosan Point — and it’s a lovely picnic spot too if the weather is kind.
